NO PREP EVENT: Less efficient, but no prep

“NO PREP” SIMPLE QUILT EVENT

Less efficient, but no prep needed!

Goal: 50 simple quilts

Volunteers needed: 40 for about 4 hours each + 4 leaders

1. Focus on collecting ONLY materials that are already larger than 62” by 82”. For example:

a. FLAT sheets

b. Bedspreads

c. Comforters

d. Blankets

e. Draperies

Any size of bedding works: from Twin through King.

2. If you have volunteers willing to create 62” by 82” pieces at home, then give them any donations that are NOT bigger than 62” by 82” well in advance of your event. These are then brought to the event. (If you do NOT have such volunteers, set them aside for another group to use.)

3. To reach the goal of 50 simple quilts you would need to collect at least 100 flat sheets AND 50 bedspreads, comforters, blankets, and draperies, I would suggest at least 110.

4. Event would run from 8am – 4pm. The volunteers and their hours would be staggered according to their task:

a. PINNERS (6 teams of 2 volunteers):

Begin at 8am, finish by noon.

No sewing.

On your feet.

b. STITCHERS (6 volunteers):

Begin at 9am, finish by one pm.

Straight stitch only.

You can bring your own machine, just make

sure that it is in good working order.

If you have a “walking foot” for your

machine, bring that too.

c. FLIPPERS (4 volunteers):

Begin at 10am, finish by 2pm.

No sewing.

Usually on your feet, but can be done

sitting down.

d. ZIGGERS (6 volunteers):

Begin at 11am, finish by 3pm.

Multiple Zigzag stitch only.

You can bring your own machine, just make

sure that it is in good working order.

If you have a “walking foot” for your

machine, bring that too.

e. KNOTTERS (6 teams of 2 volunteers):

Begin at noon, finish by 4pm.

No sewing.

Can be done sitting or standing.

5. Here is a brief description about what each “job” entails:

a. PINNERS: Two people work together to pick out two flat sheets and a “middle” (either a blanket, bedspread, comforter, or drapery piece). They use a worktable (two raised rectangular tables with 62” and 82” dimensions marked) to lay out their chosen pieces. The middle piece is laid down first, then the outside pieces with right sides facing each other would be laid on top. Pieces are pinned together before being cut to size. A 12” section near the corner of a shorter end is cut wider and will serve as the “flap”.

b. STITCHERS: Sewers use a straight stitch to sew around the pinned Simple Quilt leaving the “flap” open. A one inch seam allowance is used to insure that all three layers are “caught”.

c. FLIPPERS: Flippers begin by checking that all pins are removed, and then cut diagonally across all four corners. Then, they reach in between the two outside pieces all the way to the opposite corner, grab, and use gravity to help turn the simple quilt right side out.

Corners are poked out with the eraser end of a pencil, and the flap is pinned shut.

d. ZIGGERS: Sewers stitch inside the lump formed by

the untrimmed seam turned inside out (this should be

about an inch) from the edge. This needs to be done

carefully so as to “keep the edge” and not catch an

extra layer of material. Corners should be 90 degrees.

Using the multiple zigzag stitch AND a walking foot

minimizes puckering. After the Simple Quilt has been

stitched all around, a second row of stitches (using the

same stitch or changing to a straight stitch) is added

very close to the edge across what once was the

opening.

e. KNOTTERS: Working in teams, the knotters use a template to mark their Simple Quilt as to where the knots will go. Then, using embroidery floss threaded (double) through a curved needle they poke & pull about 6 inches of doubled thread through each mark (being sure to catch all three layers of the Simple Quilt and leaving about 3 inches on each side of the mark. They then tie in a triple knot. When all the knots are tied, the simple quilt is done! Knotters add the completed quilt to the pile, update the day’s total, and ring the bell!
