The links to the Levels 1-6 ELL Curriculum and the link to the WIDA standards, recently adopted by the State of Tennessee, may be found on the Knox County Schools website at and General Pacing: We will be following The Curriculum Framework and WIDA standards for English Language Learners can be found on the following link: addition to the curriculum listed above, we will be reinforcing classroom content areas by visiting main ideas and vocabulary through the areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing with an emphasis on comprehension, vocabulary, reading, grammar and writing skills.ASSIGNMENTS:An Interactive Notebook will be a large part of the student’s grade. It is expected that the student keep their notebook current (up to date) on a consistent basis. There will be vocabulary, writing, foldables, interactive activities, cooperative learning activities, teacher notes as well as “POP” quizzes and assessments from the materials in your Interactive Notebook. If you are absent from class you are still responsible for the pages missed in your notebook. From time to time you will be given the opportunity to use your notebook on a test, if you have kept up with it, then you should be able to be successful on your test. It is a tool, “What you put into it is what you get out of it!”Materials Needed: For this course you will need the following materials: (2) Composition Notebooks (2) Sharpened pencils & eraser (1) Colored pencils (2) Elmer’s glue sticks (1) Expo Marker **Homework if given**Occasionally students may need specific materials to complete projects or special assignments. I will send a letter home before these supplies are needed so that you will know in advance and the student is expected to have these when the project is set to begin.RESOURCES:Resources we will be using in class will be The Newcomer’s Guide to the English Language, teacher created materials, teacher resources, newspapers, magazines, library books and online websites. In addition to these resources, guest speakers approved by Knox County Schools may be used from time to time throughout the year to enhance instruction.Audio Visual Material including appropriate and curriculum related videos/clips/DVDs/websites approved by Knox County Schools may be used in class to help students understand the unit content including unit and academic vocabulary. These may include but are not limited to Holiday videos, US Culture videos, Cultural Diversity videos, videos that have a link to literature, and Schoolhouse Rock videos. Additional video clips may be used from Brain Pop, United Streaming, National Geographic, Discovery Education, and PBS but not limited to.*ALL audio/visual and supplemental resources will be used in compliance with Knox County Schools IFAB policy.ASSESSMENT:Grading Policy: ELL class uses the Knox County Schools Middle School grading scale.Grading Scale:A: 100-93B: 92-85C: 84-77D: 76-70F: 69 and belowMAKE-UP WORK & ABSENCES:If a student is absent for sickness, you have 1 day for each sick day to make up the work and turn it in for full credit. If a student is in ISS or OSS the work is due the following school day for full credit. You are still responsible for your Interactive Notebook Assignment whether you are absent, ISS or OSS. A student is ALWAYS encouraged to turn in late work since practice is important to mastery. However, late work will only be accepted within 5 days of the due date. Each day late will result in an automatic 5% decrease in the possible maximum points.1 day late- 95% max points2 days late- 90% max points3 days late- 85% max points4 days late- 80% max points5 days late-75 % max pointsGENERAL EXPECTATIONS:Students:All students are expected to follow school and district policies as outlined in the student expectations given out the first day of school.Classroom ExpectationsStudents are expected to:Bring materials to class daily.Participate in all classroom plete assignments by the designated due date.Submit quality work.Follow all classroom behavior expectations at all times. A list of expectations will be in your Interactive Notebook for reference.PlagiarismAccording to Harbrace Handbook, 15th edition: Plagiarism is defined as presenting someone else’s ideas, research, or opinion as your own without proper documentation, even if it has been rephrased. It includes, but is not limited to the following:Copying verbatim all or part of another’s written work;Using phrases, figures, or illustrations without citing the source;Paraphrasing ideas, conclusions or research without citing the source;Using all or part of a literary plot, poem or film without attributing the work to its creator.CONSEQUENCES OF PLAGIARISM Plagiarism is a form of stealing and academic fraud. Students who are found guilty of plagiarism will have the option of either re-doing the assignment within a specified time period and accepting a grade letter drop or taking a zero on the assignment. Please also know that Parent Portal does not operate in real-time and it is possible that grades can take up to 48 hours to post to Parent portal once they are entered in my grade book.ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE:Throughout the school year, NORTHWEST MIDDLE will provide opportunities for extra help and intervention daily through many different programs. Also, I will be available to assist students in homeroom.
