(1) Discuss Threats in the Operational Areas.

(a) Bring an adequate supply of all prescription and other medications as well as any necessary personal hygiene items, including a spare pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses if necessary.

(b) Drink only bottled beverages (including water) or beverages made with boiled water. Do not use ice cubes or eat raw seafood, rare meat, or dairy products. Eat well-cooked foods while they are hot and fruits that can be peeled without contamination. Avoid roadside stands and street vendors.

(c) Swim only in well-maintained, chlorinated pools or ocean water known to be free from pollution. Wear clothing that reduces exposed skin and apply repellents containing DEETS to remaining areas. Carry anti-diarrheal medication. Reduce problems related to sun exposure by using sunglasses, wide brimmed hats, sunscreen lotions, and lip protection.

(2) Environmental Health

At least 600 cases of Korean Hemorrhagic Fever (KHF) have been recorded in the last two months in the ROK, including 10 fatalities. Approximately 80% of the patients are said to be from rural areas, and health authorities are concerned that there are many more cases that have not been reported.

(3) Civilian Health Infrastructure. Urban and rural residents experience significant differences in access of health care. The coverage in the three largest cities of Taegu, Pusan, and Masan is almost 80 percent. At the rural level, the departments in the rice growing areas deliver the best services. At the bottom of the scale in terms of quality and coverage are the rural areas as well as the marginal small cities. Almost 70 percent of physicians are located in the major cities, which together contain 75 percent of the population. The problem with professional nursing care is even worse. There is an even greater urban concentration of nurse professionals than physicians.
