CIMMYT Fusarium Head Blight Workshop on

Global Fusarium Initiative for International Collaboration

March 14th Tuesday to 17th Friday, 2006

CIMMYT station in El Batán, Mexico

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a grave threat to sustainable wheat and barley production worldwide that requires an integrated research approach. The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) has been facilitating a Global Fusarium Initiative to provide a platform for international collaboration on Fusarium research, and facilitate information exchange, germplasm enhancement and the development of breeding methods and materials globally. To raise the profile of and consolidate these efforts, CIMMYT is organizing an international workshop supported by Japan-CIMMYT FHB project—the first in a series—that will highlight the importance of FHB, the status of collaborative efforts to address the disease, and future prospects for international collaboration developing specific consortiums. The agenda involves discussion, planning, and prioritization for the following topics:

FHB-QTL consortium:

Wheat FHB-QTL comparative study for the deployment of resistance genes, including the analysis of the bases of resistance, the development of an effective MAS system and the pursuit of germplasm enhancement.

Fusarium fungus consortium:

Global compilation/monitoring system of genetic diversity, pathogenicity, and toxigenicity from studies on Fusarium fungi, to control FHB and Fusarium crown rot (FCR).

International scab nursery consortium:

Development of a new International Interactive Scab Resistance Screening Nursery for germplasm enhancement and global compilation of Genotype x Environment x Management effects on resistance to FHB.

CIMMYT Fusarium Head Blight Workshop on

Global Fusarium Initiative for International Collaboration

March 14th Tuesday to 17th Friday, 2006

CIMMYT station in El Batán, Mexico

Guidelines for Abstract and Manuscript Submission

Abstracts and manuscripts will only be accepted in English. Abstracts should be limited to a single page. Manuscripts which will be published after the workshop should be five pages or less including all tables, graphics, and references. Submissions (both abstracts and manuscripts) should be formatted using Times New Roman 12-point font text and be single-spaced.

Submissions should all contain the following preliminary sections (in the order given): Title, Authors, Authors’ Organizational Affiliations, Corresponding Author's Phone Number and Corresponding Author’s E-mail Address. The title should be written in Title Case (for example: Effect of Fungal Toxin on . . . ), and be limited to 150 characters with spaces. Authors’ individual organizational affiliations should be referenced with superscripts in the author list if there is more than one organizational affiliation among the authors. The list of organizational affiliations should include both the name and address of the organization. The corresponding author should be designated with an '*' following his/her name in the list of authors. Each author should be listed by first initial(s) followed by a period, then last name. For example: Marcos José Velásquez = M.J. Velásquez.

Following the preliminary sections, abstract submissions will include only a single section (Abstract). Following the preliminary sections, manuscript submissions will include the following sections: Objectives, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Acknowledgments and References.

All text should be left justified (not centered or justified on both sides). Each section heading should be in ALL CAPS and BOLD and start at the left margin. Do not indent paragraphs. Instead, paragraphs should be separated by a space to reflect the beginning of a new paragraph. Reported text will retain capitalization, bold, and italic formats, but text flow (exact position of the text) will be altered in the formatting in compiling the overall proceedings.  Please do not use page breaks, tabs, or the footnote function (use superscripts instead) in the manuscript's text, and include hard returns only at the end of a paragraph or reference.

References should be cited in the text using the author and year and be listed in the “References” section in alphabetical order according to first author’s last name. If entries have the same authorship (single or multiple), please order within this group of references by year. Please use the lower case letters (a, b, c, etc.) only for references that could be confused with one another when referenced in the text (i.e., Lopez 1999a, Lopez 1999b, Smith et al., 2000a, and Smith et al., 2000b, - these are fictional references). Please refer to the journal Crop Science for examples for citing and formatting the references.

Please inform us if the manuscript/abstract being submitted contains special characters or symbols.

It is preferred that figures and tables be submitted in a separate file, preferably Microsoft Excel (version 6.0 or higher if possible), with a notation in the main document indicating where they should be inserted.

Abstracts and manuscripts should be submitted electronically. Documents compatible with Microsoft Word are preferred. If you are not able to submit your document electronically, or have other questions or concerns please contact us.

Submitting your Abstract or Manuscript

E-mail your submission as an attachment to Maribel Velásquez mvelazquez@cimmyt.exch. and include the subject line “CIMMYT FHB Workshop Proceedings”. You will receive e-mail confirmation of the receipt of your submission. If you do not receive confirmation within 3 business days of submitting, please contact us.

ABSTRACT

This would be the text of the abstract here. The text would be this size and type of font, and would start at the left hand side of the page (i.e., no indentation) and would follow the heading “ABSTRACT” above.

If I were to start another paragraph, I would do it as I have done here, so that each paragraph starts on the left-hand side. Therefore, since no indentation is used, you need to put a space in between the paragraphs. I hope this short formatting example clarifies your questions about the formatting requirements.

OBJECTIVES

My objectives here are just to give you a rough idea of how you should format your manuscript. This formatting example is much shorter than an actual manuscript. The formatting I am using on this page reflects the style of formatting that is required.

INTRODUCTION

The text of the introduction would be here. . .

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Use this space to describe your materials and methods…

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Of course, this space would be used for results and discussion. You may need to refer to a table or a figure. You should attach the table or figure separately, if possible, and refer to where it should be placed here in the text. I have done this below with Table 1 (not actually inserting the table, but indicating its position).

(Table 1)

More results and discussion could follow. I just wanted to show that you should indicate where you would prefer that the table is placed in the flow of the text. Note - It may not be possible to place it in the exactly preferred space once the proceedings are compiled. You can also notice that paragraphs are not indented, but instead start on the
