Graduate Theses and Dissertations. 15357.Article typeThis articles author wrote her thesis on the usage of cell phones. First citation “smartphone use paired with negative attitudes and feelingsof dependenceand anxiety about technology may increase negative outcomesassociated with smartphone use, specifically, smartphone users’ risk for anxiety and depression” (Rosen,Whaling, Rab,Carrier, & Cheever, 2013; Thomée, H?renstam, & Hagberg, 2011). Summary Cell phones are what we use to communicate and know the latest news. Teens and adults have their phones with them all day and night. Constantly on our phones have led for teens and adults to have problems with their mental health as mentioned in this article. Without their phones, they feel lost and out of touch. This article lists the authors thesis’ on the topic and shows statistics from others. In-depth summary Most young adults own a cell phone and have social media. Social media is one way one connects with others. Social media is a scary tool if people overuse it. Overusing one’s cell phone can lead to depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety are just two bad feelings that one gets when sad, stressed and confused. These feelings can be caused from a cell phone. Cell phones have apps like social media that adolescents use to see what their friends are doing all around the world. Developers have created apps that are useful to many people. Apps for helping with Math, Science, History, English and many more. Tutors have become very expensive and these apps are free. Students who are struggling with their homework and studying for exams can use these helpful apps. Having useful tools would reduce stress for the students and all for their mental health to be at a steady state. Evaluation Overall, this article is very well organized and has gotten great research. One thing I would say that is weak in this article is little information on mental health. There is a lot of information on cell phones. Relation to my research question This article will help me write up my topic of cell phone usage and the link with mental health because of the layout and information in the article. Significant quotes “Cognitive behavioralpractitioners find that incorporating technology intotheir therapiescan help with interventions for people with fewer resources by extending the scope of therapyoutside the office” (Lane et al., 2011, p 4).“Nonadherence is a costly and common problem, but new smartphone adherence apps offer inexpensive and easy solutions” (Longnecker, p 5).“In a 2015 study conducted by Smith (2015), 46% of smartphone users reported that they felt they could not live without their phone, 30%reported they felt their smartphone was a “leash”, restricting their freedom, and 19% felt their phone was a financial burden” (Longnecker, p 5).
