Release of Italian journalist in Iraq

President Josep BORRELL called once again for the release of journalists held in Iraq. He recalled that the Conference of Presidents had, on 3 March, adopted a resolution on their release. The latest news on the freeing of Journalist Giuliana SGRENA, he said, had been overshadowed by the death of intelligence officer Nicola CALIPARI. Parliament, he said, recognised the extraordinary sense of duty that Mr Calipari had demonstrated. He called on the American authorities to shed light on the tragic events. President Borrell also pointed out that photos of the remaining journalists held in Iraq had been displayed outside the hemicycle.

President Borrell read out the statement:

"The Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament's political groups calls for the immediate release of all the journalists held in Iraq and all hostages.

It calls on all the European Institutions, all governments and public institutions to take action leading to the release of Giuliana SGRENA, Florence AUBENAS and her interpreter Hussein HANOUN AL-SAADI.

It decides the photos of the hostages to be displayed in the European Parliament buildings.

It believes that there is no democracy without freedom of information and that journalists' work has to be protected all over the world.

It says that every possible effort must be made to ensure that the media can fulfil their tasks, especially in conflict zones, including Iraq.

It reiterates its warmest heart-felt support to the families and colleagues of the hostages and to all of those assumed missing."
