Microsoft Deployment ToolkitWindows 7 with Internet Explorer 11 Deployment ErrorOverview of the issueThe Windows 7 Operating System (OS) shipped with Internet Explorer (IE) version 8, however in January 2016 Microsoft stopped supporting all versions of IE except for the latest, version 11.In order to save time deploying a custom image it is a common task to include all Windows updates to the base OS imported from DVD or ISO when building the Gold (Reference/Custom) image. These updates can include IE 11 and it is adding IE 11 to the Windows 7 Gold image that causes this issue. The inclusion of IE 11 in a Windows 7 image requires you to change to a setting in the Unattend.XML file. This is the file that applies your customizations during the build, or in this case deployment, Task Sequence. If this setting isn’t changed it will cause your Task Sequence to fail with the “Initial Message” listed in the Summary/Intro above and shown in the screenshot below.Upon a reboot, and all subsequent reboots, the message "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click 'OK' to restart the computer, and then restart the installation." as shown in the second screenshot below.Issue resolutionTo resolve the issue use the following steps in MDT:Double-click the Task SequenceSelect the “OS Info” tabClick the “Edit Unattend.xml” buttonNOTE: This will take a significant amount of time to complete the first time it is done for each Task Sequence. Be patient! In the “Answer File” section expand “4 specialize”Select “amd64_Microsoft-Windows-IE-InternetExplorer_neutral”In the “Microsoft-Windows-IE-InternetExplorer Properties” sectionRight-click “IEWelcomeMsg”Click “Write Image Value” to remove the checkmarkNote that the word “False” for the value should go from being displayed in a bolded font to a normal font. This indicates the item will not be written Right-click “IEWelcomeMsg” to verify the checkmark is goneIf it is press the “Esc” key to return to the Unattend.XML fileOn the toolbar click the “Validate Answer File” button (looks like a checkmark on top of a file)In the “Messages” pane you should receive the message “No warnings or errors”If you do not then exit the file without saving and try againSelect “File”, then “Save Answer File”Select “File”, then “Exit”Click “OK” to exit the Task Sequence PropertiesTry imaging again – the process should not fail ................
