What Are The Differences Between A Home and Commercial Washing Machine?

Even though home washing machines and commercial washing machines are both washing machines that clean laundry, they have very little in common with each other.

A commercial washing machine is designed to be used multiple times a day, every day of the year. A home washing machine is designed to be used once or twice a week at most.

A commercial washing machine is built with heavy duty bearings, a powerful motor, water valves that are rated for thousands of movements, harsh environment protected electronics, and a no-clog drain valve. A home washing machine is designed to be aesthetically pleasing and be as low cost as possible. A home washing machine is great if you are only washing general home laundry twice a week. But for a business that relies on a washing machine to work every day a home washing machine is typically the wrong tool to use.

The heavy-duty design and programmability of a commercial washing machine add to their initial cost but in the long run they are cheaper to operate including repair cost. labor cost, and utilities cost.

Note: Their is a third category of washing machine called a light-commercial washing machine. These products are slightly more durable than a home washing machine and are not designed to be used every day like a commercial washing machine.

Unity Commercial washing machines are designed from the ground up to be easy to install, easy to use, easy to maintain and best of all designed for years of trouble-free operation.

Understanding Commercial Washing Machine Design

Commercial Washing machines come in two basic designe styles; hard mount / rigid mount / solid mount or soft mount style.

Hard Mount Washer

Hard mount / rigid mount / solid mount are all terms that describe the same style of commercial washer. This type of commercial washing machine does not have springs or shock absorbers inside of them. The washing machine must be bolted and anchored to a concrete floor during installation to manage the movement of the drum.

Hard mount washing machines cannot be used on hardwood floors, tile floors, or in basements unless there is steel or concrete placed underneath of them. In most cases, a hard mount washer can only be installed on a first floor of a building. The below diagram is a typical concrete pad with mounting bolts required to install a hard mount washing machine.

Unity Laundry Systems

A hard mount washer has a relatively low-water extraction rate of 100 g-force. G-force describes how fast the drum spins during the water extraction phase of a wash cycle. The low extraction rate means that the drum spins slowly and the clothes come out of the wash still very wet. A hard mount washer is typically more affordable than a soft mount washer but costs more to install given the requirement for a concrete pad and anchor bolts.

Soft Mount Washer

A soft mount washing machine is designed with internal springs and shock absorbers. The internal suspension system inside of every soft mount washing machine isolates the drum from the frame of the washer.

Because the drum is isolated from the frame, unlike a hard mount washing machine, a soft mount washer can be easily installed without the need of a concrete pad and anchor bolts. A soft mount washer can be installed in basements, upper floors and on hardwood or tile floors. The below picture shows the Unity Laundry internal suspension system including shocks and springs.

A soft mount washing machine has a high-water extraction rate of 300 g-force. This speed is more than 3 times faster than a typical hard mount washing machine. The higher speed means that the drum spins very fast and more efficiently removes water from the laundry. At the end of a cycle, the laundry is practically dry. Because the laundry is almost dry, it takes less time for the laundry to dry in a dryer. The total wash and dry cycle time with a soft mount washer can be up to 30-40% faster than with a hard mount washer.

Unity Laundry Systems only designs and manufactures soft mount washers. Prior to a Unity soft mount washing machine, the main drawback of a soft mount washing machine was their price. A soft mount washing machine is on average 30% more expensive than a hard mount washer.

The innovations built into every Unity washing machine combined with Unity's direct to customer business model enables Unity to sell soft mount washers at a price LOWER than hard mount washers. Visit to learn more about Unity washing machine pricing.
