To understand the way writers use language to provide meaning and pleasure. To consider a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as such smaller scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. To study representative works from various genres and periods (from the sixteenth to the twentieth century) and to know a few works extremely well. To understand a work’s complexity, to absorb richness of meaning, and to analyze how meaning is embodied in literary form. To consider the social and historical values a work reflects and embodies. To write, focusing on critical analysis of literature including expository, analytical, and argumentative essays as well as creative writing to sharpen understanding of writers’ accomplishments and deepen appreciation of literary artistry. To become aware of, through speaking, listening, reading, and, chiefly, writing, the resources of language: connotation, metaphor, irony, syntax, and tone. AP Literature and Composition Course Contract 2017-2018Advanced Placement Literature and Composition is a challenging class with a demanding curriculum. It is a class that requires a great deal of time and effort. Students taking this class need to be seriously committed to success. The course requires a great amount of writing and extensive reading; therefore, effective writing and time management skills are essential.I want to emphasize as strongly as possible how essential reading is to the Advanced Placement Literature & Composition course. To have an opinion about something and cogently assert it, a student must read the literature. In AP Lit and Comp, there will always be reading homework.
