The North Port Police Department Presents

Dr. Bobby Smith

Bobby Smith is here to help.

With over 30 years experience working with police officers, he knows the tools necessary to safely and successfully navigate in this fast paced world.

As a Louisiana State Trooper, Bobby was shot and blinded in the line of duty in March of 1986. This traumatic event not only stole his eyesight, confidence and independence, but also the career he had worked so hard to attain. Learning how to deal with the struggles of being a blind man, Bobby discovered he could bring hope to those around him. To help him in this venture Bobby returned to college and received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology.

BOBBY SMITH, Ph.D. -

”Your family is the most important thing you will ever have…not your job.”

Bobby Smith, Ph.D., discusses with a unique blend of seriousness and humor, how to deal with the tragedies of life. All of us experience the unfortunate reality of emotional and physical losses. Dr. Smith teaches the importance of not taking a single day or person for granted. He further explains how we learn as children that big boys don’t cry and that to ask for help is a sign of weakness. This results in the accumulation of stress, grief and loss that we may be unwilling and sometimes unable to process. Dr. Smith explains that we may choose to store the pain in what he refers to as “dead ducks in the closet”. However, avoiding or suppressing emotions does not mean they go away. Traumatic events often take their toil on one’s physical, mental, and emotional health, as well as impacting relationships and careers. Learn how to avoid these pitfalls.
