REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION: AXLE HOUSING (AXLE, INTEGRAL CARRIER - 8.8 INCH RING GEAR)Section 05-02A: Axle, Integral Carrier - 8.8 Inch Ring Gear 1993 Town Car/Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Axle HousingTools Required:Axle Tube Seal Replacer T78P-1177-AAxle Tube Bearing Replacer T78P-1225-ARemovalRaise vehicle on a hoist and position safety stands under the rear frame crossmember. Refer to Section 00-02. Drain lubricant from the axle by removing cover. ?CAUTION: The rear ABS speed sensor must be removed before the axle shafts are removed. The sensor is bolted to the disc brake adapter. Remove wheels, rotors and calipers. Remove lock bolt from the pinion shaft and remove the shaft. Push axle shafts inward to remove C-locks. Remove axle shafts.Remove RH and LH disc brake adapter brackets, bolts and J-nuts.RH BracketLH BracketRemove four retaining nuts from each disc brake adapter and wire the adapters to underbody.Disconnect driveshaft at the circular companion flange and wire it to the underbody.Support axle housing with jackstands or a hoist.Disengage brake line from clips that retain the line to the axle housing. ?WARNING: REMOVAL OF AIR SPRINGS IS REQUIRED BEFORE AXLE IS REMOVED. DO NOT REMOVE AN AIR SPRING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WHEN THERE IS PRESSURE IN THE AIR SPRING. DO NOT REMOVE ANY COMPONENT SUPPORTING OR BEING SUPPORTED BY AN AIR SPRING WITHOUT EXHAUSTING THE AIR PRESSURE. FOR TOWN CAR, REFER TO SECTION 04-05A, FOR CROWN VICTORIA/GRAND MARQUIS, REFER TO 04-05B. Remove air spring. For Town Car, refer to Section 04-05A, for Crown Victoria/ Grand Marquis, refer to Section 04-05B. NOTE: The axle vent is secured to the housing assembly. At assembly, apply Stud and Bearing Mount E0AZ-19554-BA (WSK-M2G349-A1) or equivalent to the thread to ensure retention.Disconnect vent from rear axle housing.Disconnect lower shock absorber studs from the mounting brackets on the axle housing.Remove retaining nut and bolts and disconnect the upper arms from the mountings on the axle housing ear brackets.Lower axle housing assembly until the springs are released. Lift out springs.Remove nuts and bolts that connect suspension lower arms to axle housing. Disconnect both arms from the axle housing.Lower axle housing and remove it from the vehicle. InstallationTransfer all components from old housing to new housing and make the necessary adjustments to backlash and preload. Install axle vent. Install two new wheel seals using Axle Tube Seal Replacer T78P-1177-A. Apply Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C (ESA-M1C75-B) or equivalent between the lips of the seal. Position new axle housing under vehicle and raise axle with a hoist or jack. Connect the suspension lower arms to their mounting brackets on axle housing. (Do not tighten bolts and nuts at this point).Position rear springs in area provided.Raise housing into position.Connect upper arms to the mounting ears on housing. Install bolts and retaining nuts, and tighten to 140-180 Nm (103-133 lb-ft). Tighten lower arm to axle retaining bolts to 140-180 Nm (103-133 lb-ft).Position brake lines to the axle housing and secure with retaining clips. Position and secure brake junction block to the housing cast boss. Tighten to 14-24 Nm (10-18 lb-ft).Connect air spring lines. For Town Car, refer to Section 04-05A, for Crown Victoria/ Grand Marquis, refer to Section 04-05B. Install disc brake adapters on axle housing flanges (no gaskets required). Tighten nuts and bolts to 27-40 Nm (20-29 lb-ft).Install RH and LH disc brake adapter brackets, bolts and J-nuts. Tighten bolts to 27-54 Nm (20-40 lb-ft).RH BracketLH BracketConnect shock absorber lower studs to the mounting bracket on the axle housing. Install the retaining nuts and tighten to 70-115 Nm (52-85 lb-ft). Connect driveshaft to circular companion flange. Install retaining bolts. Tighten to 95-130 Nm (70-95 lb-ft). ?CAUTION: Do not damage wheel bearing seal or ABS sensor ring. Slide rear axle shafts into the housing until the splines enter the side gear.Push axle shafts at the flange inward, and install the C-lock at the end of each shaft spline. Pull shafts outboard until each C-lock enters the recess in the side gears. Apply Stud and Bearing Mount E0AZ-19554-BA (WSK-M2G349-A1) or equivalent to pinion shaft lock bolt and install pinion shaft and pinion shaft lock bolt. Tighten lock bolt to 20-41 Nm (15-30 lb-ft). Install rear brake rotors and calipersInstall ABS speed sensor. Tighten retaining bolt to 4.5-6.8 Nm (40-60 lb-in).Install wheels and tires. Tighten wheel lug nuts to 115-142 Nm (85-105 lb-ft). ?CAUTION: Make sure machined surfaces of both cover and carrier are free of old gasket material befor applying new silicone sealant. Inside of axle must be covered when cleaning the machined surface to prevent axle contamination. Tighten cover bolts in a crosswise pattern to ensure uniform draw on cover. NOTE: Cover must be installed within 15 minutes of application of sealer or new sealer must be applied.Install carrier cover using Silicone Rubber D6AZ-19562-B or equivalent and tighten retaining bolts to 34-47 Nm (25-35 lb-ft). ?CAUTION: Overfilling axle can cause axle vent and seal leakage. Fill axle with lubricant until fluid level is within 6-14mm (1/4-9/16 inch) below bottom fill hole. Be sure that the axle is in operating position. Install fill plug.
