Weston MurdockHUMA 2400Synthesis PaperMedia Reviews and MeThe four articles I chose were ones that interested me. The first one was on a Catholic school firing a lesbian teacher. The second one on how a woman was denied citizenship, because she was atheist. The third on how a religious scholar starts up his own church that accepts all religions. The last on how a Swedish authority in the LDS church brings about doubts for the church. In these reviews I did gain a broader perspective of my community and world by seeing that there are wholesome, good people in them, and that have religious views that ultimately build good societies. The media review that shocked the most in seeing that there are good people and religions was the first one. In this article I focused in on the Catholic views of insemination, and homosexuality. What shocked me was that their views were very similar to my views of the LDS church. (My Faith) They believe that homosexuality and insemination are a sin, but through faith in Christ can be dealt with. I now look at Catholics as people more similar to me and not as some Christian denomination that is confused. The second Media Review brought up an atheist woman who was denied citizenship. She had lived in America for thirty years, and in registering for citizenship denied taking up arms in defense of the country at any cost, because she firmly believed in not taking the life of another. The immigration services in reply demanded that she join a religion, in order to comply with not wanting to fight for defense. This a dignified cause, and she should be respected for that. The law demanding that she needed to be in a religion if she would not take arms for defense of the country, was created in the seventies, and is not fit for this time. The misdemeanor that atheists are not good people, because they do not believe in God is a terrible thought to have. This of course stems from Christians knocking down atheist as sinners for denying God. Mrs. Margaret stood her ground against the court and is now a citizen. I look at her traits of perseverance and love for human lives as an example. The third review also brought up a brighter perspective of good people such as Steven Greenebaum. He was a registered reverend that could not stand the bickering between religions, when all religions practically lead people to help and be kind to each other. So he created a church that would accept all religions underneath one roof. He still retained that he was Jewish, but teaches every Sunday from different religions. I thought that this was awesome and noble-hearted. The fourth media review hit home for me as this was of my own faith. Mr. Mattson who was an area authority had brought doubts about the teachings of the LDS church. I looked into his doubts of Joseph Smith being a polygamist, and others. There was some truth that the church does not teach on a regular Sunday about. Mr. Mattson is still LDS, but what he wanted was answers from the president of the church, but was denied. Mr. Mattson may have different views than me even in the same church, but he was a brave man to go public and face turmoil from fellow members. I do not applaud what he did, but still think he is a good man. In all of these media reviews there were good people. This opened my eyes, because as me being so strongly influenced as LDS, I have always thought that good people were LDS, but with these media review and this class that is not true. People have different beliefs than me yes, but that doesn’t mean I can’t look up to them either. I have always looked up to my parents, LDS leader as examples, but never would even consider any others with different beliefs as spiritual examples. Now I look at others with different beliefs as examples to learn from, and that I think is the biggest contribution that this class and media review has opened to me. ................
