COURSE NAME: AFJROTC LEADERSHIP EDUCATION I (LE-I)
CREDIT HOURS: One Half (.5) Physical Education/Elective Credit per Semester

REQUIRED TEXT: LE-I Textbook: Citizenship, Character, and Air Force Tradition, copyright @ 2005 and the LEADERSHIP I Student Workbook.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The LE-I course for the first semester contains 10 lessons, divided into two units and two chapters. Leadership instruction will normally be conducted using lecture format each Tuesday, and Drill and Ceremonies will also be an integral part of the curriculum with hands-on instruction being provided on Thursdays. Unit 1, Heritage, Organization, and Traditions, begins in Chapter 1 with an introduction to Air Force Junior ROTC. Lesson 1 covers Organization of the JROTC; Lesson 2 covers Military Uniform and Appearance Standards; Lesson 3 addresses Customs & Courtesies for Air Force Junior ROTC; Lesson 4 describes Attitude, Discipline, and Respect; and Lesson 5 finishes Unit 1 with a discussion on Ethics. Unit 2, Individual Self-Control, covers Personal Behavior in Chapter 2. Lesson 1 begins a course of instruction in Common Courtesies and Etiquette; Lesson 2 covers Managing Stress; Lesson 3 discusses Behaving Positively, Lesson 4 covers Mental & Emotional Health Care; and Lesson 5 finishes Unit 2 with Avoiding & Preventing Violence. LE-I workbooks assignments are considered homework and are due as directed by the LEI.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1st Quarter: Unit 1: Chapter 1
Lesson 1: Organization of the AFJROTC
1. Know the purpose of Air Force Junior ROTC.
2. Know the structure of the Air Force Junior ROTC.
Lesson 2: The Military Uniform and Appearance Standards.
1. Know the history of the military uniform.
2. Know the AFJROTC uniform and standards for dress and personal appearance.
3. Know the Air Force and AFJROTC insignia.
Lesson 3: Customs and Courtesies for Air Force Junior ROTC
1. Know the AFJROTC historic customs & courtesies.
2. Know when and how to salute.
3. Know how to address military personnel using the correct title.
Lesson 4: Attitude, Discipline, and Respect
1. Know the meaning & purpose of attitude & discipline.
2. Know the roles of respect and integrity in AFJROTC.
Lesson 5: Ethics
1. Know how values & ethics are formed and how they affect both individuals & society
2. Know the United States Air Force Core Values
3. Know how to make ethical decisions
COURSE OBJECTIVES: 2nd Quarter: Unit 2: Chapter 2
Lesson 1: Common Courtesies and Etiquette
1. Know how to behave in social settings.
2. Know how to maintain appropriate personal hygiene and grooming.
Lesson 2: Managing Stress
1. Know the main causes & effects of stress.
2. Know how to manage stress.
Lesson 3: Behaving Positively
1. Know how to make healthful decisions.
2. Know how to set & achieve personal goals.
3. Know how to communicate effectively.
Lesson 4: Mental and Emotional Health Care
1. Know the suicide risk factors and signs.
2. Know when & how to seek professional mental health care.
Lesson 5: Avoiding and Preventing Violence
1. Know how to predict & prevent violence.
2. Know how to protect yourself from violence.
UNIFORM DAY: Cadets will be issued an AFJROTC uniform. Specific AFJROTC uniform items will be worn each Wednesday as designated by the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI). AFJROTC Cadets are responsible for the weekly cleanliness of these uniform items. Lost or damaged uniform items are the cadet’s financial responsibility and will be noted in the student records as a student fine until paid.
LEADERSHIP GRADING PROCEDURES: Each Quarter cadets may earn the following leadership points:
1. Student LE-I workbook counts 100-points per LE Unit completed (200-points per semester).
2. First Quarter LE-I, Unit I, exam counts 50-points (there is no 2nd quarter LE-I exam).
3. Cadets earn 64-points each week for uniform wear (based on 8-9 week quarter).
4. Cadets may earn LE extra credit by completing additional leadership sections within their student workbook (Extra point value determined by the cadet’s initiative).
5. The Leadership I Semester Final Exam will cover all of the Unit 1 and Unit 2 student workbook chapters. Of the 70 total questions (points) on the Semester Final, “Leadership” will normally account for 28 of those 1-point questions (28-points), and “Aerospace Science” will account for 42 of those 1-point questions (42-points). There are 30 points possible on the written portion of the final and the subject of the essay is assigned by the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI).
CONSEQUENCES: Each Quarter Cadets may lose the following leadership points for:
1. Uniform & Grooming Standard violations will result in a loss of up to 40-points (25 for uniform and 15 for Grooming) per week.
2. In-school suspension (ISS) is a 10-point reduction per occurrence of Bearing & Behavior Points.
3. Out of school suspension (OSS) is a 20-point reduction per occurrence of Bearing & Behavior Points and loss of field trip privileges for the semester.
4. Classroom referrals result in a 5-point reduction per occurrence of Bearing & Behavior Points.
5. Tardiness results in a 2-point reduction per occurrence of Bearing & Behavior Points.
6. Violations of classroom rules vary from 2-5 point reductions per occurrence of Bearing & Behavior Points.
7. Late assignments will result in a 20 percent reduction per day of the available points assigned for that lesson. After 5-days, a score of zero (0) will be recorded.
8. Extra credit points will not be awarded unless all assigned LE lessons have been completed first.
9. Failure of any academic course will result in a loss of field trip privileges until a passing score is recorded.
MAKEUP ASSIGNMENTS: Cadets returning from any absence are required to turn in their LE-I workbook assignments on the day of return. Late assignments due to unexcused absence (ISS & OSS are considered unexcused) will result in loss of points.
GRADING SCALE USED IN WATERLOO SCHOOL DISTRICT:

A 90% and above
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 61-69%
F 59% and below
CURRICULUM-IN-ACTION (CIA TRIPS): Cadets are provided opportunities to leave school on field trips. These trips may include visits to museums, Air Force installations, colleges, National Guard Units, and other places of interest. Other visits may be to local Middle Schools to recruit students for the AFJROTC Program and community service activities. Other trips will be as required to support community requests for Color Guard Presentations.
