This book represents the culmination of my studies in medical Spanish, which I have pursued through the support of the Foundation Fellowship at the University of Georgia. Without the academic and financial support of the Honors Program and the Foundation Fellowship, this book would not exist.

Throughout my life, I have been fortunate to enjoy the stable support of a loving family, the gift of quality education, and a sense of place and acceptance which has allowed me to explore myself and the world around me. We cannot choose the gifts that we are given, but I feel that we have the responsibility to make the most of that which we possess. This book is my attempt to give something back in appreciation for the wonderful, undeserved opportunities which I have enjoyed throughout my life.

The inspiration for this book comes from the organizations and patients which have drawn me to medical translation over the past few years. Foremost among these organizations are the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, and Mercy Health Center in Athens, Georgia.

PREFACE

Given the steady increase in the Hispanic population in the United States, the need for Spanish-speaking medical professionals is growing. In light of the current lack of bilingual physicians, our healthcare system relies on medical translators to bridge the language gap that hinders patient care. However, due to sheer patient volume and the economic burden of highly-skilled, full-time translators, hospitals are struggling to effectively treat Hispanic patients. In response to this current limitation of our medical system, I authored this forty-page book, which is designed to be used as an active reference for physicians and volunteers alike with limited exposure to Spanish.

Organized by body systems and organs, this book emphasizes technical vocabulary, important verbs, and practical diagnostic questions for each section. After nearly six months in Peru and Spain studying medical Spanish, the challenge of authoring this guide was to identify the terminology essential to patient care. Drawing upon my own clinical experiences, I have included only vocabulary with direct clinical significance. Technical jargon has been discarded in favor of accessible layman's terms. Though many exhaustive guides to medical Spanish exist, this volume is unique for its incredibly brief and highly targeted treatment of the entire body of medical Spanish.

This field guide is by no means perfect. Due to the nature of the Spanish language, regional variations may limit the efficacy of some translations. To account for this inherent limitation, I have included space for notes on most pages throughout the book. Thank you for using this field guide, and I hope it will serve you well as a concise and effective reference.
