5/1944: Damaged by explosion in engine room while fitting out at builder’s Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard. The blast

blew out port side plates causing the vessel to list alongside the dock.

1945: Considerable damage done to her bottom, sides and deck when the fully laden ship scraped the bottom of a channel.

Due to bad weather she was ordered to join a convoy of smaller vessels leaving the Thames, and to proceed up the

east coast of England which was routed to pass through the shallow channel between Inner and Outer Dowsing Sands.

It was necessary to cut the vessel in half to replace the damaged plates. Repairs were completed after war ended.

1/14/1941: Whale oil transport tanker Solglimt*was tied up alongside Ole Wegger*when both were captured at night

by German raider Pinguin in the South Atlantic whaling grounds at approx 59S-3W. The Solglimt arrived on the

previous day with supplies and bunker fuel, and to transport whale oil back to an Allied port. Later that night,

whale factory Pelagos*which was low on fuel, arrived only to be captured also. Thirteen whalers were also captured

of which two escaped to the Falklands. The captured vessels arrived at Bordeaux with some 20,000 tons of whale oil

and 10,000 tons of fuel oil.
