MaxScholar Phonics Lesson PlanVisual/Kinesthetic Drill: Use sound cards to introduce each letter/sound. Introduce the letter, picture, and sound that it makes. Flip the card with each prompt while saying: “this is the letter…(flip the card)… as in… (flip the card)… it makes the sound…”Tactile Auditory/Sound Drill: Show students how to trace the letter by making big motions with your arm or finger in the air. Then, have them do it as well, while saying the directions out loud. Then, have the students trace the letters on salt on a tray, and then write the letter(s) on a paper or notebook. As the letters are traced each time, the directions should be said out loud, for example, for the letter p it would be “down, up, and around.”Sound Dictation: Dictate 10 letters/sounds to the student in random order, sometimes repeating sounds, and/or including sounds previously learned. You should say “write the letter that makes the sound… as in…” Then, the students will write each letter down on a paper or notebook while saying the directions of how they are tracing it (see step #2).Sound Blending/Tapping: Use alpha chips or finger tapping to have students form words and nonsense words. They will tap each of the letters as they are sounding them out, and then they will scoop or trace a line while blending the sounds into words. You should say, for example: “form the word: tap”Fluency: Use the list of words to time each student individually for 60 seconds. Keep track of how many words are read in total and how many mistakes are made. The final score will be the total amount of words that they read correctly. You should keep track of these scores on the charts provided, or the online reports.Sight Words: Introduce sight words by writing them in red on index cards. You can also use arm tapping to spell them out. Students should make their own index cards. The words should be spelled and read for the student. Spelling Dictation: Choose 10 words from word list on step #5 and dictate them to the students. The student will write them down on a paper or notebook. You should say, for example: “write the word “pat,” p-a-t”Sentence Dictation: Dictate 5-10 sentences for the students to write on a paper or notebook. Say the sentence out loud and then have the students say it back. Ask them how many words they hear. Then, have them write the sentence down.Controlled Reader: Use the controlled readers from the software or make your own stories using the words, sounds, and sight words of the current lesson plan. Read the story to the students, and then have them read it back to you.
