Library Media SpecialistMission:The mission of the Glenn Hills Elementary Media Program is to support the interests and learning needs of our students so that they flourish academically while developing character traits that prepares them to become lifelong learners. Hours of Operation:The GHES Media Center is open from 7:10 am to 2:15 PM, Monday through Friday.Scheduling:Richmond County schools shall operate using the open concept, with the library media center existing to serve the learning needs of the students and teachers in the school. This means the library media center (LMC) is open to individual students, small groups of students and, faculty during media center hours. GHE Media Center operates on a modified open library concept to include a weekly rigid class schedule.Specials Scheduling:45 minutes for the library classes are set to a rigid Specials Schedule to accommodate weekly library instruction, book circulation, and grade level planning for teachers. K-2 paraprofessionals stay with their class during this time.Library Specials instruction include read-aloud, curriculum topics, independent reading, library skills, internet safety, computer and web-based activities, reference, and research mini-lessons. Additional visits can be scheduled if students need more time to check out books.Open Library Scheduling: Large group activities outside of the rigid specials schedule are planned and scheduled by the teacher for varying times, and lengths of time, to fit a curricular need. Teachers are not to schedule the same block of time week in and week out.Teachers may schedule to bring large and whole groups to the media center outside the rigid specials schedule via the Media Center Schedule located on the circulation desk and online. It is policy that the teacher always remains with his/her class while in the media center outside of the rigid Specials Schedule.Collaboration Visits:Cooperative planning between the media specialist and teachers will help optimize utilization of the available resources. Meetings for such planning are arranged and documented among teachers and the Library Media Specialist.Planned collaboration lessons are executed in the library media center, executed by the classroom teacher and facilitated by the Library Media Specialist.Before Collaboration Media Center visits, teachers are encouraged to do prior planning with the Media Specialist in preparation for research sessions, curriculum-related activities and information skills mini-lessons being conducted in the Media Center.Check Out Policy:Faculty and staff may check out as many materials as desired. However, every effort should be made to return materials when they are no longer being used or issued a return request by the Library media Specialist. Selected equipment may be loaned out to faculty and staff on a short-term or long-term basis.Students may check out 1-2 books at a time for one week (K-Gr 1 are allowed 1 book/week.). Books can be renewed if there is no waiting list. Books are marked lost and fines applied 30 days after checkout. Overdue Materials and Fine Notices are sent to homeroom teachers to keep students parents informed.Book and other library materials should be returned using the book drop at the circulation desk so that they can be scanned and accounted for.Books are marked lost and fines applied 30 days after checkout. Overdue Materials and Fine Notices are sent to homeroom teachers to keep students parents informed.An AR Level Chart as well as a Lexile to AR Conversion Chart are posted on the wall to assist students in easily choosing books on their reading level.Reference Materials Policy:Reference materials (dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauruses, atlases, almanacs, other marked materials) are only available for use in the Media Center unless given special permission by the Media Specialist.Using Shelf Markers and Library Cards:Each student has a personal shelf marker which also serves as their library card. The shelf markers are located on the wall on the right when entering the media center. Student reading levels are also listed on their shelf markers both in Lexile levels as well as AR levels. These levels need to be used as guidelines when choosing books.Library cards are issued to students K-5th grade. Every SY each student is provided with a library card. If students lose their library card, students may be asked to bring in $1 to have a new one made.?Media Center Rules and Policies:PBIS Media Center rules and policies are posted on the walls throughout the media center. These rules always need to be followed. Students not following Media Center rules, demonstrating inappropriate or disruptive behavior will be asked to return to their classroom. Appropriate reporting will be sent to their teachers, administration and/ or parents.Lost and Damaged Books:Students and patrons will be charged for lost and damaged library books and library materials, textbooks and curricular materials, and technology equipment and resources. The price charged for a lost or damaged book and material shall be determined by the replacement value of the book or material and/or amount needed to repair, replace, and clean all damage. Students will not be able to check out more books until all fines are paid or books are returned.A student will be refunded the full amount paid for a lost book upon returning the book in acceptable condition, together with the receipt of payment, provided the request for a refund is submitted BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1st OF THE FOLLOWING SCHOOL YEAR.Challenged Materials:It is the responsibility of the Library Media Technology Committee to review challenges to materials using the procedures found in the RCSS Media Handbook, which is posted on the district website.Selection of Instructional Materials:Selection of instructional materials for the Media Center is the responsibility of the Media Specialist. Students and Patrons are encouraged to submit book recommendations through the online Book recommendations form posted on the Library Media Center webpage. The Media Specialist also maintains a quality collection with proper weeding procedures and adherence to national, regional and state standards for media centers.Use of the Media Center Computers:All patrons will adhere to the RCSS Acceptable Use Policy when using computers. Students and patrons are assigned a RCSS Microsoft Account to login to school computers for academic use.Safety Issues:Escape routes and a map of the school is posted by the entry door’s light switch in the Media Center. School-wide drills are also conducted periodically by the administrators and staff to prepare students for potential threats.Internet safety lessons are provided by the Media Specialist to students during the year.Volunteers for the Media Center:Volunteers are very necessary as the Media Assistant position has been eliminated by the district.Student volunteers will be trained to re-shelve books and do various clerical duties at the Media Specialist’s discretion. Parent and Community volunteers are encouraged to complete the necessary volunteer training to be able to volunteer their services in the Media Center. Parent and community volunteers must complete the appropriate RCSS Parent Volunteer Training to volunteer in Richmond County schools.Posted June 2020 ................
