GOAL: STUDENTS WILL LEARN HOW TO EFFICIENTLY RESEARCH BY TOPIC ON LEXIS ADVANCE AND FIND RELEVANT STATUTES, CASE LAW AND SECONDARY SOURCES. THEY WILL UNDERSTAND HOW THE LAW IS ORGANIZED VIA THE TOPIC INDEX (BROWSE TOPICS) ON LEXIS ADVANCE. IN PARTICULAR, HOW THE TOPICS CORRESPOND TO THE LEXISNEXIS® HEADNOTES IN A CASE. THEY WILL ALSO LEARN HOW TO USE SHEPARD’S® AS A RESEARCH TOOL TO ENSURE ALL RELEVANT AUTHORITY IS UNCOVERED. THE KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OBTAINED IN THIS LESSON WILL APPLY TO FUTURE MEMO AND BRIEF ASSIGNMENTS.
NOTE:
a. This lesson assumes prior knowledge of primary and secondary authority and what is binding versus persuasive. This lesson plan is most effective after students have some familiarity with retrieving documents on Lexis Advance. The class focuses on using the topic index and other features to find relevant authority related to a statute based assignment. This lesson also includes managing results and refining to the most relevant answer sets. In-depth analysis of specific documents in the search results is not part of this lesson.
b. Each Lesson Plan contains four documents:
- Overview: This document is the Overview providing the Lesson Goals, Objectives, Contents, On-Demand training resources, and links to related lesson plan documents below.
-Teacher’s Guide: A detailed class outline including “Teacher Tips”.
-PowerPoint: Associated PowerPoint with talking points and screen shots.
-Follow-up Exercises: Short exercises and questions to reinforce the lesson.

OBJECTIVES
1. KNOWLEDGE: AS A RESULT OF THIS CLASS, STUDENTS WILL BE BETTER ABLE TO:
• Understand the Lexis topical digest system and how legal materials are organized by topic
• Understand how to begin topical research
• Understand the value of Shepard’s as a research tool
• Understand how to analyze case and statutory results
2. Skills: As a result of this class, students will be better able to:
• Find relevant topics based on their research assignment
• Research efficiently when faced with topical research
• Engage in meaningful statutory research
• Efficiently refine case law results and locate the most relevant opinions
• Utilize Shepard’s as a research tool to find additional relevant authority
Contents:
1. BROWSE TOPICS ON LEXIS ADVANCE (SEE TEACHER’S GUIDE)
2. Present Sample Assignment (see Teacher’s Guide and PowerPoint)
3. Develop a Research Plan:
• What is the research topic?
• What area of law does this issue address?
• What is the jurisdiction?
• How should we begin topical research?
4. Research the Issue on Lexis Advance (Live Demonstration or PowerPoint)
• Refer to Teacher’s Guide
• Refer to accompanying PowerPoint
5. Follow-up Exercises: Short exercises for in class or homework purposes to reinforce how to browse topic index, search by topic to locate relevant statutes and case law, and use Shepard’s to find more authority.
