Day 1

Warm up activity (Gathering):

Have students respond individually to the following statement: “It is important to clarify my values because…”

Introduction of Main Activity to the Advisees:

Explain to the students that you will spend the next 2 advisory sessions exploring self-knowledge.

Main Activity Directions:

Step 1. Write the quote:

“This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night and the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.” (Shakespeare, Hamlet – Act I, Scene IV)

on the board. Have students silently write a word or phrase on the board that represents their idea of what this quote means to them. After each student has had the opportunity to express himself, have the students quietly read student responses. After each student has had the opportunity to read, facilitate a discussion using the following questions as a guide:

• Do you think self-knowledge is important, if so why?

• How might self-knowledge affect your decisions or life choices?

• How well do you think you know yourself?

Allow 10 minutes for this step.

Step 2. Distribute the Self-Inventory to students. Give students 12 minutes to complete the inventory.

Step 3. After each student has completed the self-inventory, collect it for the next advisory session. Debrief.

Debriefing:

Think of 2 ways that developing your self knowledge can enhance your relationships with other people.

Closure:

Inform students that you will be redistributing the self-inventory in the next session and will discuss it. Inform them that you will delve deeper into self-knowledge in the next session.

Day 2:

Warm up activity (Gathering):

Have students form a circle and popcorn responses to the prompt: “In the past week, I have learned that I am…” 5 minutes.

Introduction of Main Activity to the Advisees:

Explain to the students that you will distribute their self-inventories and will engage in some values clarification.

Main Activity Directions:

Step 1. Distribute students’ self - inventories. If students have not finished, allow 4-5 minutes for students to complete their inventories. Write the following questions on the board for students to respond to:

• What were the 5 items you put a star next to on your self-inventory?

• Give examples why you believe that these self-inventory statements describe you.

• Give examples why some of these statements do not describe you.

• How can these traits help you in defining who you are in your relationships with others or in your career interests?

Step 2. After all students have finished responding to the statements, assign students into pairs. For the next 5 minutes, students share their self-inventory results and their answers to the questions on the board with their partners. Have students report out.

Step 3. Distribute the Values Inventory to students. Instruct students to complete the inventory individually. While students are completing the inventory, write each list on the board with enough space beside the lists for students to indicate their 3 most important values.

Step 4. After 5 minutes, have each student, one at a time, come up to the board to order their 3 most important values in both lists. After each student has completed this task, facilitate a discussion regarding students’ choices. Look for patterns or similarities for the group. Use the following statements as possible prompts for discussion:

• What values are the most important to the group?

• Do we share similar values?

• Why are these values important to you?

• What other values or personal traits, not on the list, are important to you?

• How can we use this exercise to develop a closer knit advisory group?

Debrief.

Debriefing:

How have the self-inventory and values-inventory informed your view of yourself? Your peers?

How has this exercise helped you clarify your post-secondary goals and career aspirations?

Closure:

Facilitate a brief discussion about the importance of self-knowledge and how it helps to build positive relationships and respect for the similarities and differences within a group.
