Instructions – Line of Best Fit

1. Calculator set up – Part 1

▪ Press “2nd,0” to bring up the catalog

▪ Scroll down and place the arrow next to “DiagnosticOn”

▪ Press “Enter” twice

(Note: This step only has to be done once during the activity)

2. Calculator set up – Part 2

▪ Press “2nd, +” to bring up the memory

▪ Press “4” to bring up “clrAllLists”

▪ Press “Enter”

3. Calculator set up – Part 3

▪ Press “2nd, Y=” (Top left button) to bring up stat plot

▪ Press “ENTER” twice to turn on the stat plots

4. Enter in your coordinates

▪ Press “stat” and “edit”

▪ Enter all of the x coordinates in the L1 column

▪ Enter all of the y coordinates in the L2 column

*Make sure your data is accurate!

5. Calculate data

▪ Press “stat” and use right arrow key to move to “calc”

▪ Scroll down to “linReg(ax+b)” and hit enter

▪ Press “2nd, 1” to bring up L1

▪ Press the “,” key (It’s the button directly above 7)

▪ Press “2nd, 2” to bring up L2

▪ Press the “,” key

▪ Press “VARS”, right arrow to move to “Y-VARS” and hit “ENTER” twice to bring up Y1

*The command line should look like this on the screen:

LinReg(ax+b) L1,

L2, Y1

▪ Press “ENTER”

Copy the data to your scatterplot data sheet

5. Graph the line of best fit

▪ Press “ZOOM” and scroll down to “ZoomStat”

▪ Press “ENTER”

Make sure your points coincide with the points on the graph.

Draw the line that’s on the calculator onto your grid.
