!Online Dictionary Linguee introduces 218 new language pairs

Cologne, Germany, February 25, 2014: in 2009, the German-based Linguee GmbH launched the first extensive search engine for translations, initially for searches in English and German. Since then, the search engine for translations has grown rapidly: Linguee now helps more than 1 million users a day to find translations of words and

!expressions, making it one of the top 20 largest internet sites in Germany.*

Linguee aims to repeat this success on an international scale: just a few months after its launch, Linguee added French, Portuguese, and Spanish; just recently, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese (Mandarin) were added, too. Today, another 218 languages were launched on Linguee, including official EU languages. "The internationalization of our website has been our main focus in the past years," says Dr. Gereon Frahling, founder and CEO of Linguee. "With 234 language combinations, we can now offer Linguee all across the globe." As of today, Linguee users can search for translations in Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish, Swedish, Russian, Chinese

!(Mandarin), and Japanese.

Students and users who need to write texts in a foreign language on a daily basis turn to Linguee for help; professional translators seek inspiration for the best-matching terms and phrases with Linguee, too. With Linguee, users find translations for short phrases such as "strong relationship" or "strong opinion" and can use the translations others have made to find just the right wording. This simply wasn't possible until Linguee came along, due to the limited content and search options

!of traditional online dictionaries.

Linguee goes to great lengths in terms of technology to help with such complex search requests: many petabytes (millions of gigabytes) of texts are gathered automatically, checked for translations, and analyzed. You can search more than 1 billion translations from the EU and the UN; you will find excerpts from patent specifications, multilingual commercial websites, marketing papers, and from the complete product range of highly specialized online shops. The

!printed version of these translations would be long enough to encompass the globe.

"We were frequently asked by our users whether Linguee was going to offer further language combinations. At last, we can now fulfill even highly unusual language requests," says Gereon

!Frahling.

!!IVW-online.de !About Linguee

Linguee is a bilingual online dictionary and a search engine for translations. Contrary to traditional bilingual dictionaries, Linguee allows you to search the 1000-fold of bilingual translated texts. One year after they had started developing the service, Dr. Gereon Frahling and Leonard Fink founded Linguee in December 2008. Another twelve months later, Linguee left the beta stage and launched its final version in May 2010 for German-English, with new language pairs such as English-French, English-Portuguese, and English-

Spanish following suit in August 2010. Today, Linguee is among the top 100 websites in Germany* and has grown to be one of the most frequented websites worldwide. New language pairs are added frequently, making the service available to an ever-growing number of users all over the globe.
