ITEC 7400: Culturally-Responsive PedagogyKristina McBrideKennesaw State UniversityAbstractSummary of The IRIS Center for Training Enhancements. (2009) Cultural and linguistic differences: What teachers should know. Retrieved on November 8, 2012 from According to the IRIS Center online module, “Cultural and Linguistic Differences: What Teachers Should Know”, there are several important factors to consider when working with students from various cultures and backgrounds (2009). Educators should be able to (a) understand how a teacher's own culture can influence his or her teaching; (b) describe what it means to provide culturally responsive instruction; (c) recognize how linguistic diversity may influence school outcomes for students; and (d) understand the importance of family involvement in school. While these can be challenging tasks for teachers, the student’s success in the classroom may be dependent on these revelations. Culture’s Impact on a Student’s SuccessSuccessful teachers realize that individual and cultural attitudes and beliefs play an important part in every classroom. According to the IRIS Center, providing meaningful and effective instruction is often not enough. Teachers should also embrace opportunities that expand self-awareness, broaden their knowledge of various cultures and resist the urge to stereotype. My willingness to be receptive to various backgrounds will help my students become more comfortable and engaged in the classroom environment. I must remember to take into account each child’s specific needs as I attempt to promote lessons that are authentic and challenging. I believe that this awareness will help me to become a better, more prepared technology coach. Linguistic Diversity’s Influence on Classroom BehaviorThe inability to communicate is frustrating for teachers and students. An effective educator will recognize and appreciate multiple ways of communication. The more aware teachers are of the development of language stages, the more likely the English learner will receive appropriate differentiated instruction. As a tech coach, I need to be aware of the technologies I can integrate into instruction to help ESOL students. Current support technologies include mobile devices, interactive white boards, web2.0 tools, and apps. Digital storytelling, word cloud generators, and video gaming are some of my favorite teacher tools to help students who speak English as a second language. Culture and Language Impact on Family Involvement The parent- teacher relationship is a vital one. For the best interests of the student, it should be a collaborative partnership. Educators should be aware that this type of collaboration may not be the norm in other cultures. I believe it is the teacher’s responsibility to extend that offer of support. In instances where even simple communication with the parents is an obstacle, using technology resources like Google Translator, a free online translator, can help close the gap. ConclusionAs stated above, individual and cultural needs are variables that shape a child’s learning style. While it can be challenging, effective educators consider all parts of the student and adjust their teaching style accordingly. It is exciting to know that as a technology coach I can use what I know about those diverse backgrounds and find technology tools that will help make a positive impact on that student’s learning environment.
