Natural Sciences & Engineering - University of South Carolina Upstate
Natural Sciences & Engineering
Overview
The Division of Natural Sciences and Engineering at USC Upstate provides Bachelor of Science degree programs in biology and chemistry, a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry, as well as pre-professional coursework for students interested in engineering, pharmacy, and the health professions. Courses are also offered in geology, physics, and astronomy. The division supports a variety of activities that encourage student learning and success. Students and faculty interact in the classroom, laboratory, and through division-sponsored activities such as research experiences, internships and clubs.
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry
This American Chemical Society certified program includes traditional areas of study such as organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry as well as biochemistry and upper-level classes in chemical instrumentation, spectroscopic interpretation, medicinal chemistry, environmental chemistry, and polymer science. The curriculum focuses on core and elective chemistry courses, ending with a capstone senior-seminar. Students also complete general education requirements as well as physics and calculus. Advanced students are encouraged to participate in an undergraduate research project with a faculty member or attend summer REU programs. Students in laboratory classes use highlevel instrumentation such as infrared (IR), ultraviolet/ visible/near-IR, fluorescence, and atomic absorption spectrophotometers, calorimeters, thermogravimetric analyzers, cyclic voltammetry, gas (GC/MS) and liquid (HPLC) chromatographs, and a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer. Students learn advanced laboratory and computation skills necessary to be career ready.

Chemistry majors have a variety of career options because of their strong math and laboratory skills. Some graduates from USC Upstate have started work with industry directly, while others have entered graduate school for master's and Ph.D. degrees. Other possibilities include working in government labs, teaching, chemical or pharmaceutical sales, forensic or environmental science, scientific journalism, or professional schools like medicine, pharmacy, or dentistry.
Bachelor of Science in Biology
The biology curriculum provides majors with a diverse offering of introductory and upper-level courses, which include comparative anatomy and physiology, invertebrate zoology, botany, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, plant taxonomy, histology, parasitology, animal behavior, ecology, and developmental biology. Research techniques ranging from classic methods to cutting edge technology are taught in laboratory courses that accompany most biology classes. Support courses in chemistry, physics, mathematics, foreign language, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and computer science make for a well-rounded student trained in both the humanities and natural sciences. And because chemistry is such an integral part of the biology curriculum, biology students can easily earn a minor in chemistry by taking 2-3 additional courses. Students who major in biology at USC Upstate look forward to careers in a wide range of fields such as research, quality control, teaching, consulting, as well as business enterprises. Students who enjoy the outdoors may pursue marine biology, forestry, fisheries and wildlife management, soil conservation, environmental monitoring, and other occupations at the local, state, and federal level. Students often prepare for pre-professional programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, and veterinary medicine by majoring in biology. Other students elect to continue their education in graduate programs in
preparation for research, public service, or education careers. Opportunities to conduct research with biology faculty members are numerous, and these strengthen students' learning while at USC Upstate as well as enhance their marketability in post-undergraduate pursuits.
Internship Opportunities
Faculty members sponsor undergraduate research and supervise internship and experiential learning. Recent internships include oncology research, wildlife rehabilitation, dental medicine, veterinary and human medicine, and science education.
Research Opportunities
Research experiences help our students be more competitive for employment and graduate school admissions. Students may work side by side with professors either for course credit or pay, funded by National Institute of Health (NIH) or university grants.
Student Clubs and Organizations
Students pursuing a biology or chemistry degree may participate in a variety of clubs. These include the Health Professionals Club, Science Club, and the Chemistry Club.
