We will be studying literature, grammar, an assortment of writing styles, and creative thinking. The goal this year is to create a learning environment that focuses on promoting a rigorous curriculum so that your child remains challenged and interested. In order for your child to be successful this year, it is very important that the students are present in class daily, prepared with all materials and homework and engaged in all assignments.Grading:● Tests, essays, and major projects will be worth 40% of the quarterly average. ● Classwork, quizzes, and formative assessments will be worth 35% of the quarterly average. ● i-Ready (technology) will be 15% of the quarterly average. ● Participation and homework will be 10% of the quarterly average.Grading Scale:Grade Scale Percent Value Verbal Interpretation A 4.0 – 3.50 90 – 100% Outstanding B 3.49 – 2.50 80 – 89% Above Average C 2.49 – 1.50 70 – 79% Average D 1.49 – 1.0 60 – 69% Poor F .99 – 0 0 – 59% FailureMy goal is to instill a love of reading and writing. We will strive to write well by writing often. Grades will reflect the time and effort the writer has devoted to the piece.Materials:Preparation is one of the keys to success. In an effort to ensure that the students remain organized they will need to bring the following materials to class every class period: ● Agenda for homework (mandatory) ● 1 Composition journal (kept in class) ● Pens, pencils and paper ● Hi-lighters ● Earbuds ● Index cardsTechnology:● Students will be primarily using Google Classroom for assignments and essays in class and at home. ○ Each student must create an academic email using Gmail. This will be used to turn in assignments and receive feedback and grades. ○ All email names must be professional and include first/last name. No nicknames or slang words.● Students are required to sign up for Remind 101. Parents are highly encouraged to do so. ○ This app will give daily classroom updates including homework. ● i-Ready is a required weekly assignment. ○ Students must complete 45 minutes AND number of lessons assigned. ○ NO make-up is allowed. If the student does not complete the above for one week they cannot double up the next week ○ After the third incomplete assignment, students will be required to attend tutoring to catch up. ■ Grade will not be changed with tutoring assignments.Class Requirements:● Students are required to bring all items in the materials list to class daily. ● The composition notebook will be used as follows: ○ Composition notebook will be divided in three: ■ Section 1- Notes and literary terms ■ Section 2 - Bellwork and writing ■ Section 3- Academic vocabularyAbsence Procedures:● Students will be able to receive, complete, and turn in make-up work when they are absent; in order for the grade to be input into the gradebook the absence MUST be EXCUSED. If they are absent, they will be given a Z in the gradebook until the assignment has been turned in and the absence has been excused. ○ It is the student’s responsibility to inquire what assignments, activities, test or quiz announcements were administered. ○ Parents and students may find this information on our school website: ○ If the student is absent on a test or quiz day, he/she will be expected to make arrangements to make up the quiz or test. ○ Those students who have been absent for an extended period of time will need to make arrangements to stay after school to complete the makeup work. ○ **It is the student’s responsibility to make these arrangements. If a student has not made up the assignments within two days of their return to school, zeroes will be given for all assignments that needed to be made up.Homework:● Homework increases responsibility by developing organization and study skills. It encourages independent learning while appropriately involving parents. It also promotes and supports the classroom curriculum while encouraging students to become lifelong learners.○ Homework will be assigned every week. ○ All students will be required to register to the school’s website in order to receive alerts via email or text messages whenever homework and reminders are posted. ○ Students will be given the opportunity to turn in late homework assignments one class period after the due date with a deduction of 30 points. (i-Ready lessons must be passed by due date, no extensions allowed.) ○ All students are required to read 30 minutes every night. ○ As homework fosters responsibility, failure to return homework will result in a zero.Quizzes and Tests:● All quizzes and tests will be announced (verbally, written on the board, and posted on ) ● Pop quizzes may be given at any time based on previous night’s homework.Classroom Guidelines:● Be in class seated and ready to work when the bell rings. ● Bring all books and materials to class. ● Follow all procedures and policies as outlined in the school handbook. ○ This includes cell phone use. Phones are to be put away during class. ● Treat each person in this class with respect and dignity. ● No gum, candy, drinks or food allowed in class. ● Pay attention and follow directions the first time they are given. ● Put away all electronic devices.Following guidelines will result in:● * Daily verbal praise and acknowledgement. ● * A stress free learning environment.● * Pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere.Not following guidelines will result in:*1st violation: Warning / Action plan *2nd violation: Parental Contact *3rd violation: Detention will be given *4th violation: Referral to administrator for further action. *Any student who fights, damages school property, or is disrespectful (as defined by teacher) will be sent to the office immediately.Plagiarism:Plagiarism, according to the University of Maryland Code of Academic Integrity, is "intentionally or knowingly representing the words or ideas of another as one's own in any academic exercise." Examples of acts that would be defined as plagiarism are:● Copying word for word, and neglecting to both enclose the words in quotation marks and to cite the source ● Summarizing or paraphrasing someone else's words or ideas and failing to cite the source.Plagiarism is a serious act of academic dishonesty which is not taken lightly. Repercussions are:● Immediate referral to the Administration ● Failing grade on the assignment ● Student will be required to redo the assignment ● Conference with parents/guardianThis syllabus will remain posted on the school website for the school year. ................
