Dr. Xu-Dong Liu was born in Shanghai, China on March 7, 1962, to KaiBen Liu and XiuFeng Yang. During his first 27 years of life, Xu-Dong lived in his hometown and studied at Fudan University, one of the top universities in China. At the age of 24, he married his beloved wife Shirley Lu, whom he had known since he was 16. In 1988, their only child Evan Liu was born.

In the fall of 1989, Xu-Dong landed in California, and went on to pursue graduate study at University of California, Los Angeles. He earned his Ph.D. degree after 4 years of mathematical study under the supervision of Professor Stanley Osher. He continued his advanced mathematical research at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University with Professor Peter Lax, for another 3 years. In the fall of 1996, Xu-Dong started his teaching and research career at the Department of Mathematics, University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2000, he earned tenure professorship of UCSB. Over the years, Xu-Dong traveled to many cities in the world to conduct mathematical research and to attend academic conferences. During his visits around the world, he made many friends, in and outside his field of research, and had productive collaborations with them. In particular, he had a group of good friends in Taiwan, where he visited three times.

Xu-Dong had a deep passion for his career. He is an established top level researcher and scholar. He published dozens of research papers in the fields of Scientific Computing and Applied Mathematics and made significant advances. He was an excellent teacher and taught many courses at various levels. He also supervised four Ph.D. students.

Xu-Dong had an enormous amount of love for his family and was extremely proud of his son who is now 17.

Xu-Dong had various hobbies. In particular, he loved to play tennis.

On December 12, 2004, Xu-Dong was diagnosed with brain tumor. He fought a courageous battle with the illness and was able to come back to monitor student exams at his Department in the summer of 2005. At the young age of 43, he finally passed away peacefully at 10:10pm, October 19, 2005, in Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, with his family by his side.

Xu-Dong will be remembered as an achieved mathematician, a fine teacher, a great colleague, a warm-hearted friend, a dedicated husband and a caring father.

Looking back, it is as though Xu-Dong is still among us, energetic, brave and humorous, with his love for family and friends, and his passion for mathematical research. With love, we are forever connected to Xu-Dong who will live in eternity.
