Director of Italian Cultural Institute in Ukraine Balloni praises events as part of world Italian language week

KYIV, November 3 /UKRINFORM/. Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Ukraine, Doctor Honoris Causa from the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University Nicola Franco Balloni, while commenting on the events of the Week of the Italian Language in the World in Ukraine, said in an interview with an UKRINFORM correspondent that these events had been held in Kyiv, Odesa, Lviv and Mariupol.

A final event was the performance by the Kyiv chamber orchestra and one of the leading classical guitarists, maestro Carlo Marchione, at the National Philharmonic Society of Ukraine on October 28.

A gala concert entitled "Vivat Opera!" was also successfully performed at the National Opera House of Ukraine on October 25.

"As part of popularizing the Italian language in the world, Italian films were shown in Ukraine, contests, exhibitions and meetings with writers were held, while outstanding Italian professors gave their lectures about contemporary Italy at Ukrainian universities. Over 50 various events were conducted in the country within this year's week," Nicola Franco Balloni said.

He recalled that Italian and Ukrainian cultural figures are constantly maintaining cooperation. In particular, the Italian Cultural Institute in Ukraine has drafted many interesting joint projects with the National Opera House of Ukraine, and at least one the works by Italian composers is annually presented on the main Ukrainian stage. The premier performances of "A Masked Ball" by Giuseppe Verdi were successfully held this summer, whereas in February next year, director Italo Nunziata will stage an opera by Gaetano Donizetti, "The Elixir of Love."

With the assistance of the Italian Cultural Institute in Ukraine, a team of young singers paid a two-week visit to Italy in August this year, as part of an education program.

"Another question is the holding of the effective Weeks of the Italian language in Ukraine that increase the number of those who mastered their knowledge or those who started learning the language," Nicola Franco Balloni said. "This year's Week of the Italian language in Ukraine was dedicated to the memory of Ukrainian linguist and translator Anatoliy Perepadia, and his latest translation of the trilogy "Our Ancestors" by Italo Calvino was presented," he said.

Nicola Franco Balloni noted that his institute had set the goal of strengthening the dialogue between Ukraine and Italy at the level of education, science and culture. Ukrainians had a chance to listen to famed opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti, see Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida, and outstanding directors Mario Monicelli and Ettore Scola during this year's Molodist Film Festival.

Last year, Kyiv hosted the Days of Italian Fashion, with the demonstration of the Italian brands Valentino, Gianfranco Ferre and Giorgio Armani.

Cooperation in publishing industry is fruitful as well. In particular, the Institute of Literature at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Folio Publishing House have already published ten books of Italian classics in the Ukrainian translation from the "Library of Italian Literature" series. Ukrainians finally managed to read in their native language the masterpieces of Francesco Petrarch, Luigi Pirandello, Italo Svevo, and Umberto Eco.

Nicola Franco Balloni said that an Italian cultural center would be soon opened on Lvivska Square in Kyiv.

He said that Ukraine has a great European history and culture, while an eternal love for the beautiful unites Italian and Ukrainian nations.
