Unit Guide: Literacy Narrative

Essential Questions: What are the required literacy skills needed to be successful in post-secondary academic

institutions? What is a literacy narrative and how do my own experiences and learning styles contribute to my

narrative? What should an academic essay look like and how can I improve an individual essay and as a

writer in general?

Goals: Identify and begin to work on literacy skills needed to be successful in post-secondary academic

institutions. Begin to cultivate our own personal educational and learning philosophy and understand how

that relates to our own academic literacy narrative. Learn the structure of an academic essay including MLA format, properly citing sources in-text,

and creating a works cited page. Learn how to give and receive feedback to strengthen our writing and our individual essays.

Required Text: The Norton Field Guide to Writing with Readings. Fourth Edition. Richard Bullock and Maureen Daly Goggin, authors.

. Complete by the second week of classes. Reading: "Making the Most of Lectures" from LBHS Media Center Website. Grammar Diagnostic Exam. Multiple-choice exam completed in class. Readings from The Norton Field Guide to Writing with Readings:

o Chapter 4: Developing Academic Habits of Mind. Pages 45-52. o Chapter 2: Reading in Academic Contexts. Pages 10-32. o Chapter 1: Writing in Academic Contexts. Pages 3-9. Group Activity: Summarize and present most important information from chapters 1, 2, and 4 from The Norton Field Guide to Writing with Readings. Reading from The Norton Field Guide to Writing with Readings: Chapter 10 "Writing a Literacy Narrative" Class Reading: from Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, An American Slave. Chapters 1, 6, and 7. Includes small group activity analyzing author's purpose and rhetorical structure. Activity--Flash Fiction: Definition of narrative. Complete two short autobiographical narratives.

Writing Assignment (500 Words): Personal Goals Statement, Scholarship Letter, or College Essay. Ongoing writing assignment to aid students in drafting letter for the local scholarship packet or college entrance essay. Includes short lecture on identifying your personal academic or learning philosophy.

Readings from The Norton Field Guide to Writing with Readings. Chapter 59--Literacy Narratives. Choice of two of the following: o Rebel Music, by Daniel Felsenfeld o Se Habla Espanol, by Tanya Maria Barrientos o Mother Tongue, by Amy Tan o Lost and Found, by Lynda Barry

Unit Essay--Literacy Narrative. 1000 word essay in MLA Format. Must be word processed using Google Docs or MS Word. All sources must be cited in-text and on a works cited page.

Lecture/Lessons: Introduction to the Noodle Tools platform (LBHS Media Center); Use of the Canvas Learning System; structure of an academic essay; MLA format; in-text citations; works cited page.

Readings from The Norton Field Guide to Writing with Readings: o Chapter 30: Getting Response and Revising. Pages 306-312. o Chapter 31: Editing and Proofreading. Pages 313-317.

Writer's Workshop: Includes modeling and students participating in writer's workshop. Students will give and receive feedback on their writing. (Fishbowl Method)

Notes:

Complete all reading assignments at home by the assigned due date. Due dates are posted in class.

All essays must be turned in on time. There will be specific due dates and times for each essay. Failure to turn in your essays on time or meet the requirements will result in removal from class.
