Fire at Químicos Holanda in Costa Rica
San José / Mülheim, December 14 – On December 13, at around 11 a.m. local time, a fire broke out on the site of Brenntag’s subsidiary, Quimicos Holanda, in Puerto Moin / Limon, Costa Rica. Three people were seriously injured and have been air lifted to a specialised hospital for further treatment. One of the injured died in the hospital.
Due to the rapid response of the local fire department the fire was prevented from spreading. As a precautionary measure, the neighboring port of Puerto Moin was temporarily closed until mid night and local residents were escorted to safety. The fire was under control at 7 p. m local time and has been extinguished.
Brenntag took over the site in 2000 and equipped it with state-of-the-art safety technology. The site was certified to ISO 9001 in 2002. The plant in Puerto Moin has a 10,000 m2 storage installation for liquid products - primarily organic solvents and caustic soda – which are used for industrial applications. The storage capacity holds around 5,400 cubic meters in 25 tanks. Five employees, who have been trained and are experienced in the handling of chemicals, work at the site.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. Brenntag has initiated an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the incident. As soon as further information becomes available, Brenntag will report on it.
