Summer 2nd half Week 1 (week beginning 1.6.20)Each week there will be a range of activities that I will put on the website for you to access if you wish. These activities will be similar to the sorts of things we are doing in school this term. There will be some resources that you can print if you are able to, but if you don’t have access to a printer then you can still use the ideas and get your child to write on any paper. 43529255905500This week the home learning focus will be around minibeasts. You can watch and listen to the story ‘Mad About Minibeasts’ by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz here: listening to the story, you might like to have a go at some of the following activities throughout the week. There is no expectation for you to do all of these, please dip in and out and complete as much as you and your child would like to. We would love to hear how you get on with these, so please feel free to drop us an email on: bumblebees@ashill.norfolk.sch.ukWriting activities – see separate ‘Minibeast Writing Tasks’ document.Reading – Each day encourage your child to read with you. This could be a book you already have at home or an e-book from the Oxford Owl site. Most children now know many sounds and are confident in using them to sound out words and blend the sounds together to say the words. They also know quite a few tricky ‘red’ words.Sharing books and chatting about what you have read is a great way of engaging children in stories which they feel are too hard for them, and include much richer vocabulary than is contained in simpler reading books. Why not try different types of books, not just stories? You could use reading to find out facts and information about things your child is interested in, or look at joke books, comics, instruction manuals/recipes before making something. Another way of accessing free e-books online is by going to: just click on “Teacher sign in” and enter: Username:?parents@harpercollins.co.uk Password:?Parents20!?Click on “Collins Big Cat” and then select your child’s book band colour (e.g pink/red/yellow) and start reading. Maths activitiesDon’t forget to use your Mathletics login to access other maths activities online. The Department for Education (Oak National Academy) has daily lessons too (link on website).Look at some empty packages and boxes. What shape are they? Can you find a cube, a cylinder or a cuboid shape? Make a collection of small objects that are 3D shapes, such as a small ball, a toy building brick, a dice and a glue stick. Hide the objects on a bag and then put your hand in the bag to choose one of the objects. Describe the shape to an adult and see if they can guess the shape you are holding. Then, they could describe a shape for you to guess. Go on a 3D shape hunt around your house and outside. There is a tick sheet on the website you could use. Use some empty cardboard packages to build a model. Maybe you could create a fantasy minibeast? Talk to an adult about the shapes you have used and why you used them. We would love to see photos of your finished models!Other activitiesCan you make some minibeast moves? Listen to the following episode and join in with ‘bees do the waggle dance.’ you have any other books at home about Minibeasts or Nature? The Hungry Caterpillar? Insect / bird identification books? Can you make an area in your garden for minibeasts / a bug hotel? on a minibeast hunt – you could use the tick sheet on the website. Try some Minibeast craft – Butterfly symmetry? Ladybird potato stamps? some minibeast cooking (Cheese snails look delicious!) ................
