Ecosystem SustenancePreamble:India is recognized as one of the seventeen mega biodiversity regions of the world. Out of 34 hotspots of diversity in the world, two are present in India. The Western Ghats is one of them. Throughout the Ghats wide varieties of plants and animals are found, many of which are endemic to this locality. Due to anthropogenic activities the biodiversity is depleting and the valuable plant species are under threat. Hence to conserve the rare, endemic and endangered plants of Western Ghats under ex-situ conservation strategy the arboretum has been established.Vision and Mission:Conservation of the endemic, rare, endangered and threatened plant species for the well being of the environment and ecosystem sustainability through ex-situ conservation strategies. Academic and Administrative Audits (AAA)Preamble:The college has dedicated auditing facilities for assessment of various units such as departments, committees, various centres, individual faculty and support staff. A systematic and comprehensive evaluation of the departments, committees, office, library and other significant centres has been one of the practices to ensure the smooth functioning of the institution. The feedback on the infrastructure and services is also undertaken every week. A separate committee monitors this process. DramaticsPreamble:Dramatics refers to the study and practice of theatre arts. It is a liberal study course that surveys theatre from the world of the ancient Greeks to the present day. In the Indian subcontinent, the art of drama originated during 200 BCE. In Sanskrit literature, drama is considered as the highest achievement. Drama helps in propagation of knowledge about culture, tradition and social issues. Practicing and performing drama helps personal growth of students and the society at large. In this perspective, the cultural centre for training students in Dramatics’- ‘Ranga Adhyayana Kendra’ was established at SDM in 2012. Dramatics help to build artistic talents, knowledge and appreciation about theatre, drama performances. The field of dramatics helps students to analyze the practical methodologies in critical studies, play writing, performance, design and production.Vision and Mission:To create original, innovative and relevant theatre experiences, especially those stimulate and inspire young people to think critically about the world around them, and to engage in constructive and creative self-expression.To produce innovative and courageous artists and scholars poised to be the creative leaders of tomorrow.To elicit creative self-expression, creativity and artistry. The interests, present artistic skills and enthusiasm form the criteria of selection. An extensive training is given to these students every day from 4.15 P.M to 5.15 PM on all working days. Special training is also given on holidays.The systematic ledger of attendance and details of practice is maintained by the drama teacher in the drama centre. The attendance credit is given on a weekly basis to the academic section by the teacher in-charge.The budget proposal and action plan is prepared for each academic year by the committee after consultation with the drama teacher.The consumable stationeries and properties for each academic year are purchased or hired based on the necessity. The drama students are sent to different university level, intercollegiate level competitions and for other performances after the thorough practice and rehearsals.For every competition, fresh budget proposals have to be submitted through the committee coordinator to the principal and the budget has to be sanctioned. The drama team is sent for participation along with the drama teacher or with deputed staff in-charge in Youth festivals and other cultural performances. DancePreamble:Dance is the art form that reflects historical and cultural values and traditions of a society. It also exhibits the present cultural values of people. Dance has aesthetic and symbolic value pertaining to each culture. The dance forms are categorized into different forms based on their place of origin. In India, there are many forms of classical, semi-classical and folks dances which are mainly based on language and geographical regions. Some of the dance forms are in the danger of disappearing due to modernization and lack of support. Therefore, the college trains the students on different dance forms to promote them and to build dancing skills among students.Vision and Mission:Sustaining and enriching the rich Indian heritage of dance.Objectives:To develop knowledge about different dance forms.To train and produce outstanding dancers.To contest in different competitions and also to give stage shows.To promote different dance forms pertaining cultural heritage To foster expressive skills, creativity and artistry among students.To provide entertainment and recreation to students and audience.Methodology:The students are selected for dance training through talent search, enrollment and college competitions.The selected students are allotted for various dance forms based on their interests. Detailed budget proposals are prepared in advance for the purchase or hiring of properties for different dance forms, for choreography, travel allowance, refreshment and for miscellaneous things.Frequent trainings and need based training are given to the students by the dance teacher or choreographers.The systematic monitoring of attendance and details of practice is maintained by the trainers in the cultural centre. The attendance credit is given on a weekly basis to the academic section.The proper supervision of student’s rehearsals is made by the dance teachers and trainers.The off stage presentations of rehearsed dance forms are done by the teams before going to the actual stage performance or competition.For every competition, fresh budget proposals are submitted through the committee coordinator to the principal and the budget has to be sanctioned. Music Preamble:Music is the language of harmony and peace. It is the art which every individual can understand and enjoy without any language barriers. Music soothes the mind and body. It develops positive mindset among people. Every form of music has its own way of presentation whether it is Eastern or Western. Singing demands some major requirements such as lyrics, capability of the voice, pitch, rhythm etc. It is an impressive and impactful skill to posses. In this regard, the college forms a group of singers, provides them regular training in various types of singing and gives them opportunities to perform in different competitions and functions.Vision and Mission:Sustaining and enriching the rich Indian heritage like music.Objectives:To promote different musical forms and cultural heritage. Instrumental Music Preamble:Instrumental music is performed at different places during special occasions. Instrumental music is akin to vocal music in creating harmony. The musical notes, rhythm, pitch and tunes attract the music lovers and common people. There are wide varieties of instruments which have their own audience. The percussion and non-percussion instruments are the two major forms of instruments. Instrumental music is less practiced within the student population compared to vocal music. In order to bridge this gap and conserve geographically valued instrumental music, SDM trains students in this art.Vision and Mission:Sustaining and enriching the rich Indian heritage like instrumental music.Objectives:To promote different instrumental music forms that are representative of cultural heritage. The Documentation Committee of the college collects reports from various committees like curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular and processes (edits/rewrites) them with an intention of publishing them for the benefit of its stake holders. The committee arranged to upload in EERPMS platform for future references. Nammura VarthePreamble:The 'SDM Multimedia Studio’ under the guidance of Dept. of Journalism and Mass Communication was established in the year 2007 to train the students in Electronic Media Production. This production centre encourages pupils to come up with various studio productions like producing weekly TV news bulletin, Documentary, Special segments, Short Films, Promo, Interview and Vine Videos. In the same direction, to give the practical experience of News production the Journalism department produces a weekly news bulletin - “Nammura Varthe”.“Nammura Varthe” started in August 15th, 2008 and has successfully produced more than 462 news bulletins so far. This 22+8 minutes weekly news bulletin gives the proficient exercise to students. This course includes collection and classification of news and visuals, writing appropriate scripts, anchoring, recording and editing the news. It also enables the students to assess the real work pressure and news value. Nammura Varthe is telecasted in ‘V4 News’ a district level news channel. Namma Kudla has viewers in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu and Chikkamagalooru District.Vision and Mission:To ensure quality education and practical training in electronic media news industry.Objectives:To ensure practical knowledge of electronic media new processing. To train students in scripting and processing technical information for production of TV news bulletin.To cultivate the value of positive journalism.Methodology:Nammura Varthe has a news desk, consisting a News Editor and Bulletin Producer (Staff). This desk has link with Belthangady Press Club and various public and private institutions, which provide news information. Invitations of public programs will be sent to the desk. NE and BP shall collect all the information and classify the news according to the style sheet of the bulletin (positive news only). Collected news will be distributed among the student groups for coverage purpose.Every week, a students’ team from either graduation or post-graduation will be allotted few news topics each as a substance for the news bulletin of that week.Each student in a team has to choose one topic or suggest some for the news purpose. Later they will be collecting information and prepare a rough script on selected issue. This process will continue till the recording date. It is a weeklong continuous activity.Then the students as per the schedule will take camera (with all backup instruments like mike, stand, etc.) to the spot and capture the video.Followed by the shooting they will re-write the script and handle it to the bulletin in charge for editing purpose. Bulletin producer will prepare the RUN ORDER on the basis of priority to the events.Every week 12 to 14 stories will go on air.A detailed, edited script will be prepared by the BP on the basis of inputs provided by Student Reporters.This script will be around 8 to 12 pages per session.The next process is to prepare for the news reading session, student from the college who is selected in audition round, will be allotted with anchoring.Script will be fed to the teleprompter in advance so as to make the anchor more comfortable with news reading.Generally, as per schedule, the news reading takes place on every Thursday noon.As the news script consists of anchor byte, voice over and visuals, voice over will be given by other trained students.Once the news reading is finished editing works begins.First News visuals and anchor portion will be dumped to editing suit by Video Editor. Later, visuals will be cut short and aligned with the pre-recorded audio-visual track.Anchor portion will be modified with changing background using chromo key setting.Anchor track will be imported to editing suit.Proper visuals will be aligned with anchor portion and separate story tracks will be rendered.Editing is done in edit suite by the technical staff using “Adobe Premiere Pro - CS6 Editing Software”.Slugs will be prepared by B.P or Students which will be added in final Editing track. It will be around 4-5 pages.Text scrolling will be prepared by the B.P and it will be added to designated track.Finally all story tracks will be rendered in a single track with news montage and style sheet form. Final rendering will take 20 to 30 minutes.In the end 20 minutes news bulletin will be produced, which shall be telecasted in local cable channel. It is telecasted in “V4 News’ cable channel, with connectivity to 4 districts. It’s telecasted on every Sunday at 11.OO A.M. As one of the oldest and most popular world pastimes, coin collection is now often referred to as the King of Kings among hobbies. As per this program NSS girl volunteers of the college visit the higher primary schools of Belthangady Taluk and interact with female students of 6th and 7th standard to provide appropriate information to young girls regarding the process of menstruation and basic hygiene practices to be adopted to avoid health problems. It is a beautiful medium of student’s expression of their artistic work, any piece of interesting and informative news or features. It is a platform to enable the students to develop their creative writing skills. The college has 36 wall magazines of various departments with different names. Each department displays magazines every week/fortnight.
