Elisa WeberJan 29, 2017WEEK 16: LABSASSIGNMENT #1: INTRO TO LABS Section I:Watch the lab instruction video in MEMBER RESOURCES under “Labs”.Section II:Answer the following questions –Explain the parts of a blood panel including HCT, Hgb, Leukocytes, and Neutrophils.HCT: the count/percentage of red blood cells to white blood cellsHGB: the weight of hemoglobin in a L of bloodLeukocytes: a type of white blood cells that help the body fight diseaseNeutrophils: a type of white blood cell that fights off bacteria specificallyWhat does a prenatal blood panel test for?A prenatal blood panel tests for the following categories…CBC: Complete Blood Count includes testing for your hemoglobin, hematocrit, RDW or red cell distribution, MCV or mean corpuscular volume – your average volume of red cells, MCH or mean corpuscular hemogolobin – the average mass of HGB per red blood cell, MCHC the value from the measurement of HGB and HCT. WBC Differential (White Blood Cell): this test will break down a count of WBC within each individual kind of WBC. It will count the amount of leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils, and platelets. Finally there is screening for blood type, antibodies, rubella, hepatitis B, HIV, and rapid plasma regain. Why are these the items that are tested? What are they looking for? This allows us to get a better understanding of how her body works. We are able to find out her blood type, which is important in a situation of transfusion or if the baby has an opposite blood type. Knowing her CBC allows us to she is she iron deficient? Is she lacking in the average CBC count, this could effect baby negatively and will need to be managed. Her blood volume increases with pregnancy and will continue to thin even if she does not have a high iron diet. Knowing her WBC offers a window into her immune system, each different WBC could tell us even what she could be fighting specifically. For example basophils are only present when there is a parasite. Describe how to read a basic lab report based on the video.Look at her numbers and compare the ranges present on the lab, know pregnancy ranges for certain things that labs will not include as they typically only have “normal ranges” for non-pregnant. Explain the ranges found on a lab report. Why are there ranges and how does this help you?Ranges are a set of numbers, for example 10-15, in which is considered normal for whatever particular test you doing. Ranges help us understand what is under the umbrella of “normal”. We can tell from a range quiet easily whether or not someone is way outside of normal, or doing just fine. It gives both clear boundaries and some “leg room” for those on the higher or lower end of the range. Section IV:Based on the previous lab report, explain/discuss the following –Flags and their various partsThis particular lab result has flags showing low sodium, high potassium, and high glucose in their BMP. This may lead to blood sugar issues or be a cause of it regarding glucose. Low sodium may lead to kidney failure, could be related to dehydration. High potassium could lead to fatigue or weakness. Hemoglobin and hematocrit came back low – this may cause of anemia.Folate came back low – this can cause infertility, neural tube defects, cardiovascular disease. UnitsUnits refer to the measurement given for that particular test result. Depending on which lab you receive the test back from will determine what units are used. Routine/STATSTAT refers to the status of the lab test, routine referring to the kind of status. In this case a routine stat is just proceed as normal, instead of the latter. SourceThis refers to where the particular specimen was taken. As it could be a number of things, whether fluid, blood, or tissue. The importance of listing medications being takeIt makes sense that labs will be effect by different medications. This needs to be known before the labs test is conducted so the lab technician is able to make conclusions while implementing the following information regarding the persons medication intake. ................
