The UNC Department of Psychiatry grew to include 85 full-time faculty, 62 residents, and an annual budget of nearly $47 million. From 1994 to 2005, the Department’s NIH research portfolio grew from approximately $3 million to more than $20 million. Clinical operations were completely redesigned and expanded, to include 76 inpatient beds and a comprehensive array of outpatient and partial hospitalization services. The general (adult) psychiatry residency training program received more than 125 applications from American medical school candidates for 12 available slots during the 2005 application cycle, and fellowship programs in several areas (including child & adolescent psychiatry and research) are nationally renowned. An active development program created a substantial endowment, including six new endowed professorships.
