COUNSELOR’S CORNER
Parenting Resources
I hope that everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. It seems that we all return to our work after a break with more energy and commitment, especially after the New Year. The children seem to have returned to school with renewed interest in learning and education. I hope that one of your New Year’s resolutions is to continue to show an interest in what your children are doing in school, because parental interest is an important motivating factor for children to achieve academically. All parents are partners in their child’s education. The staff at school can’t do it without you. The children who are the most successful are the ones whose parents participate actively in their child’s education. There are lots of ways that parents can participate. One of the most important ways is to be with your child while he or she does their homework, and spend time reading with your child every night. The more time children spend reading, the better readers they become. It is also important to be a good role model for your children. Let them see that reading is important to you as an adult. Try turning off the TV, shut down the laptop, and have a family reading time. There is a double benefit in helping your children become better readers and having a special family time.
This month’s “TA-DA’s” for the Giving Season
Giving Tree/Box: I want to thank all the parents and students at Halethorpe, as well as the 4th grade SADD members for all of the wonderful hats, socks, mittens, and toys that we collected before the holidays. The gifts were taken to the South West Emergency Services (SWES). SWES provides assistance to local families. Please contact Mrs. Vernier if you would like more information about SWES.
This month’s “What to look for”
Counseling Intern: Mrs. Vernier will welcome another School Counseling intern from Loyola University and will work with students, staff, and parents from Halethorpe on Tuesdays through the month of May. Please welcome Jennifer Mustillo to Halethorpe.
3rd grade trip to UMBC: The 3rd graders will tour the campus and develop an understanding of what college life is like. They will also attend a UMBC Basketball game and received prizes.
Magnet School Testing: Good luck to the fifth graders who will be taking the tests.
--Mrs. Vernier, School Counselor
A NOTE FROM THE HEALTH SUITE
HIGHLIGHTS:
• When exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to lose heat faster that it can be produced.
• Low body temperature may make you unable to think clearly or move well.
• You may not know you have hypothermia.
• If your temperature is below 95°, the situation is an emergency – get medical attention immediately.
When exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced. Prolonged exposure to cold will eventually use up your body’s stored energy. The result is hypothermia, or abnormally low body temperature. Body temperature that is too low affects the brain, making the victim unable to think clearly or move well. This makes hypothermia particularly dangerous because a person may not know it is happening and won’t be able to do anything about it.
Hypothermia is most likely at very cold temperatures, but it can occur even at cool temperatures (above 40°F) if a person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or submersion in cold water.
Victims of hypothermia are often (1) elderly people with inadequate food, clothing, or heating; (2) babies sleeping in cold bedrooms; (3) people who remain outdoors for long periods—the homeless, hikers, hunters, etc.; and (4) people who drink alcohol or use illicit drugs.
Recognizing Hypothermia --
Warnings signs of hypothermia:
Adults: shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, drowsiness
Infants: bright red, cold skin, very low energy
What to Do:
If you notice any of these signs, take the person’s temperature. If it is below 95°, the situation is an emergency—get medical attention immediately. If medical care is not available, begin warming the person, as follows:
• Get the victim into a warm room or shelter.
• If the victim has on any wet clothing, remove it.
• Warm the center of the body first—chest, neck, head, and groin—using an electric blanket, if available. Or use skin-to-skin contact under loose, dry layers of blankets, clothing, towels, or sheets.
• Warm beverages can help increase the body temperature, but do not give alcoholic beverages. Do not try to give beverages to an unconscious person.
• After body temperature has increased, keep the person dry and wrapped in a warm blanket, including the head and neck.
• Get medical attention as soon as possible.
A person with severe hypothermia may be unconscious and may not seem to have a pulse or to be breathing. In this case, handle the victim gently, and get emergency assistance immediately. Even if the victim appears dead, CPR should be provided. CPR should continue while the victim is being warmed, until the victim responds or medical aid becomes available. In so me cases, hypothermia victims who appear to be dead can be successfully resuscitated.

HERE’S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THAT YOUNG FILMMAKER IN YOUR HOUSE!
President Obama is inviting U.S. students, grades K-12, to submit a one-to-three minute video highlighting the power of technology in schools. Finalists could have their videos screened at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. and posted on the White House website, YouTube channel and social media pages. Please make sure you send in a completed form for yourself, your spouse, a grandparent, etc. so that all can continue to volunteer.
Every volunteer and chaperone must have completed a new application and be cleared for volunteering. Applications are available NOW! Please do not wait to return your application to the school.
VOLUNTEER TRAINING WORKSHOP
All persons wishing to volunteer in the classroom, in the building, or to chaperone a field trip MUST attend a Volunteer Training Workshop. The training video is available to view in the school office.
