Verbs!

verb- any word that is used to express action or a state of being.

or….

any word you can change to past or present tense.

Find the verbs in the following sentences by changing the sentence to present or past tense.

Hef chewed on the bone.

Skylar was squinting.

Einstein is happy.

I love skiing.

verb phrase= main verb+ one or more helping verb

helping verb- helps the main verb.

*note- sometimes helping verbs can be part of a contraction, like can’t. The word not is NEVER a verb, so in contractions always keep not out of the verbs.

Ex: can’t = can not can= helping verb.

HELPING VERB POEM

is, are, am, was, were, can, could

may, might, must, ought to, shall, should

do, did, has, have, had, will, would

These are the helping verbs so good.

Plus BE, BEING, BEEN, DOES- HUH!!!!

Identify all the main verbs and helping verbs in each of the following sentences. No need to write the entire sentence, just the verbs.

1. Fortunately he didn’t need surgery.

2. His physical therapist has designed an exercise program for him.

3. Before his exercise, he must spend at least five minutes warming up.

4. He will be using a back-extension machine.

Does he walk indoors on a treadmill or outdoors on a track?
