Where will you be and what will you do?The program provides an extraordinary opportunity to explore and learn about modern Russia and Russia’s unique contribution to the world culture and diversity. Utilizing a cross-disciplinary approach, students will explore the intellectual and cultural history of Russia with an emphasis on religion and social life. While traveling through European part of Russia and visiting three most populous and significant cities, often referred to as “Three Russian Capitals”, the participants will learn of the country’s historic roots, modern life and future aspirations. Russians love visitors and the foreigners are most welcome. The program is a unique chance to see the world and have fun, while being safe and receive well-deserved academic credits.Academics: (100-120 word maximum)Includes credit and course numbers, what topics will be covered as well as any other additional requirements. INT 340: Religions in Russia?(3 credits)The sacred history, historical development, principle beliefs and practices of Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism and how each of the traditions is practiced in Russia.Taught in English.Fulfills requirements:Core course in Social/Cultural Awareness OR Globalization concentration OR Europe Concentration for International Studies majorsElective in Russian Studies minorInternational Experience and Applied Learning for International Studies majorsRUS 294: Russian Study Abroad?(3 credits)Students will juxtapose cultures, make cognitive and social connections, and reflect on their experiences of being immersed into a diverse society. A unique opportunity to converse with native speakers and improve global communication skills.Taught in English Fulfills requirements:Explorations beyond the ClassroomRussian Studies minorProgram Activities and Features: (50-75 words maximum)In addition to planned outings, this allows you to highlight regional features and optional trips. Moscow: besides standard destinations like Red Square, St. Basil’s, Kremlin and Armory, we will visit Orthodox University and the Old Believers Community. Unique country-house tour: Masha’s Dacha includes lunch & dinner.Kazan: Visit architectural monument of pre-Mongolian period and unique Sviyazhsk Island, a Russian Orthodox shrine. Degustation dinner with master-class “Secret of Tatar cuisine”.St. Petersburg is a Northern Venice, a world-famous tourist destination. Especially for our group, Academy of Fine arts invites us to learn about Icon restoration. Visit Novgorod with its medieval fortress and try traditional Russian cuisine. Location: (100-120 words maximum)This is the location for more detailed information about the sites that you’ll be visiting while on study abroad. During the program we will visit three major cities of Russia, starting with 8 days in Moscow. There, you will get introduced to Modern Russia and oldest Christianity and Jewish cultures. Then, the group will spend 5 days in Kazan, a crossroads between Islam and Christianity, which is called the “Third Capital” of Russia. The last 9 days will be set in St. Petersburg, the cultural capital of Russia.
