Ten candles on a birthday cake,

(hold both hands up, palms facing you)

All lit up for me.

(wiggle all ten fingers)

I’ll make a wish and blow them out.

(palms facing out)

Watch and you will see.

(blow and bend fingers down)

Fingerplay: “Birthday Candles”[2]

As my birthday candles flicker so bright,

(hold hands up in front of head, with palms toward face and briefly wiggle fingers)

I take a deep breath of air and hold it tight.

(Keep hands in position. Inhale deeply and hold)

Then I blow and blow with all my might,

(Blow upraised fingers, as if blowing candles out)

And all the flames disappear from sight.

(Bend all fingers down out of sight)

1 When I woke up this morning

(stretch and yawn)

I clapped and shouted hurray!

(clap, then say “hurray”)

I was very excited

For it was my birthday!

(point to self)

I ate what I wanted for breakfast.

(pretend to eat)

I had a friend over to play.

(pretend to dribble ball)

I got three cards in the mail

(hold up three fingers)

for it was my birthday!

(point to self)

We had cake for supper

(make circle with hands for cake)

With candles on the top.

(hold up fingers for candles)

I blew them out and made a wish-

(blow)

That my birthday would never stop!

(shake head “no”)
