Music Monday!

Create Your Masterpiece!

Challenge: Compose a masterpiece using your resource of choice and share it with your family.

There are lots of ways we can compose our own music, with and without technology! Below, I am sharing my favorite resources to make music, as well as some no-tech ideas for instruments. Explore them and choose one (or more) you would like to try out. If you want to share a video or picture, I would love to hear and see your work! Email me at kchunn@. Have fun!

Technology-Based Composing Tools

MusicPlay Once you are on the homepage, select "melody composition" or "rhythm composition" and use the "interactive" composition chart tool. Select what level you would like to do, and then create your masterpiece! *You no longer need a student log-in or password to access this site*

**4th & 5th Grade--MusicPlay has a recorder composition tool where you can compose a song on the recorder, and it will play you what you wrote. To find this, go to the recorder tab on the left side of the home page. A page with two orange boxes will pop up next. #6 on the smaller orange box (recorder introduction and tools) is the recorder composition tool.

Chrome Music Lab This amazing site allows you to compose and listen to your music in a variety of ways. Choose one of the experiments, such as Song Maker, Rhythm, or Kandinsky, and explore! You can save your music once you have something you love.

Incredibox This website works on computers and possibly tablets (I have not tested it on a tablet) but does not work on a smartphone. Incredibox helps you create tracks in different music styles. For full access, you can download the app on a smartphone (OPTIONAL), but the demo site I have linked here works fine on computers and is FREE! Choose from four styles (alpha, little miss, sunrise, the love). Drag the symbols to dress each character and listen to how your track sounds!

Music Maker--PBS Kids Best for grades K-2, this site lets you adjust the notes and speed of the music to create a short musical piece.

Non-Technology Based Composing Ideas

Make A Water Xylophone Fill glass drinking glasses with different amounts of water and tap them gently on the edge with a metal spoon or (kid-safe) butter knife. You can even add food coloring to show the different notes and compose your own color-coded music. Click the link for detailed instructions from the "Still Playing School" Blog.

Build Your Own Instrument: Get creative and look for objects around your home that could be turned into instruments. Paper towel rolls, tin cans, pots and pans, spoons, rice, beans, cereal boxes, and so much more! Almost anything can become an instrument--include you! See if you can make a song with your invented instrument. Make sure you choose materials that are not breakable and ask a parent/guardian for permission! For inspiration, check out this interview with members of the group Stomp that performs on

Broadway and tours around the world. **If you built an instrument for your STEM assignment last week, you are welcome to use this to compose**
