Lesson 1 ? Understanding Stress What is Stress? ? Reaction of the body and mind to everyday

challenges and demands. ? Can appear quickly or build slowly. ? Some stressful situations are unavoidable,

how much it affects you, perception. ? Reaction depends on previous experiences.

Reacting to Stress ? Can be positive or negative. ? Positive stress can motivate you. ? Stress has negative effects when it interferes with

your ability to perform/harm your health. Causes of Stress ? People, objects, places, events, and situations can all

cause stress. ? Can be real or imagined. ? Anticipated or unexpected.

Your Body's Response to Stressors ? When you feel something is dangerous, difficult, or

painful, your body automatically begins a stress response. ? Nervous and endocrine systems are active during the stress response. 1. Alarm ? body and mind go on high alert. "Fight or Flight". 2. Resistance ? body adapts and reacts to the stressor. You may briefly perform at a higher level with more endurance.

3. Fatigue ? if exposure to stress is prolonged, your body will lose its ability to adapt. Stress and Your Health ? Physical changes that take place in your body during

the stress response can take a toll on your body. ? Can lead to a psychosomatic response. Some physical effects of stress include: ? Headache/weakened immune system. ? High blood pressure/clenching jaw/grinding teeth. ? Digestive disorders.
