To end our geography unit, you will be following your favorite Chicago baseball team across the country!! First and most importantly, pick your favorite Chicago team, The White Sox or The Cubs. In order to find out the 5 cities of opposing teams, you will visit you take a Geography Scavenger Hunt. Once you have your favorite Chicago team and cities of opposing teams, you will research Chicago and each of the 5 opposing team’s cities to find information pertaining to the 5 themes of geography. All information will be displayed on a large poster of the United States (which you must draw!). A written paper must also accompany the poster to explain all themes in detail!

** For each team’s city (including Chicago) you must address ALL of the 5 themes of geography. **

1. Location:

a. Absolute Location

b. Relative Location (3 examples)

c. The location (absolute & relative) should be labeled and shown accurately on your map

2. Place:

a. Physical Characteristics (at least 3)

b. Human Characteristics (at least 5; can be points of interest or tourist attractions; political; economic; cultural; 1 human characteristic MUST be a tourist site)

c. Pictures must be included for BOTH physical and human to accompany facts for this category

3. Region:

a. Label the formal regions of the city (city boundaries, state borders (of each state you visit), and the outline of the U.S.

b. Explain 1 other formal region & 1 example of a functional region each city is a part of. (This information does NOT need to be labeled or described on the map, but needs to be explained in detail in the paper)

4. Human – Environment Interaction:

a. Provide 2 SPECIFIC examples of ways in which humans have altered or changed the environment in EACH city you visit. (Be SPECIFIC, don’t just tell me that they recycle in Chicago!)

b. This information does NOT need to be labeled or described on the map, but does need to be addressed in detail in the paper.

5. Movement:

a. Explain how movement has affected the country in terms of people, ideas, & goods. Provide 2 examples for each… (people, ideas, & goods)

b. This information does NOT need to be labeled or described on the map, but does need to be addressed in detail in the paper.

In addition, the following physical features must be labeled on your map/ poster:

~5 Great Lakes ~Both Oceans surrounding U.S. ~Mississippi River

~Illinois River ~Great Salt Lake ~Rio Grande

~Colorado River ~Mt. Olympus ~Mt.McKinley

Grading:

This project will be worth a total of 50 points! Here is how the grade breakdown will work:

Paper= 25 points total

6 cities, 5 themes for each= 90 points (3 points per theme for each city)

Typed, double-spaced, 12 point font= 5 points

Must use COMPLETE sentences (small paragraph form)

Label each city and specify which theme you are addressing.

For example:

Chicago:

Location: (short paragraph)

Place: (short paragraph)

Poster= 25 points total

Outline of U.S.= 7 points

Accurate absolute & relative Location shown & labeled= 7 points

Pictures & labels for Place (physical & human; including additional physical features)=

10 points

City & state names & borders accurately shown for Regions= 5 points

Neatness, Effort, Organization= 11 points
