Johnson, Professor and Extension SpecialistOur 2020-2021 Wheat Variety Performance Trial entry information is shown below. Colorado State University promotes crop variety testing as a service to Colorado’s crop producers who depend on us for unbiased and reliable crop variety performance information to make better wheat variety selection decisions. The results from the 2020 irrigated and dryland wheat variety performance trials are available on our website at . Results for the 2020, 2-year, and 3-year summaries of the variety performance trials will also be published in our Wheat Technical Report, Making Better Decisions. As in the past, the 2020-2021 trials will be conducted by Colorado State University’s Crops Testing Program. Trial locations are shown on the map on the next page. For the dryland trial, companies will enter varieties or experimental lines in all eleven locations at $3025 per entry. Likewise, all varieties or experimental lines entered in the irrigated trials must be entered in all three locations (Burlington, Fort Collins, and Haxtun) at $825 per entry. The attached entry form should be returned to the Crops Testing Program by Monday, August 17, and seed should be delivered to Akron no later than Monday, August 24. We require 15 pounds of seed per entry for the dryland trials and 9 pounds of seed per entry for the irrigated trials. Please send us untreated seed and we will treat all seed with CruiserMaxx Cereals seed treatment. Seed will be packaged at a rate of 700,000 viable seeds/acre for the dryland trials, and 1.2 million viable seeds/acre for the irrigated trials. Dryland and irrigated variety performance trials will be replicated three times at each location. Our wheat variety testing system also includes a great Collaborative On-Farm Test (COFT) program conducted by Colorado Extension Agents and cooperating wheat producers for comparing variety performance of four to six varieties on many Colorado farms. Results are disseminated in the same manner as the dryland and irrigated variety trial results. Seed companies are encouraged to enter a variety in the COFT program. The cost for an entry in the 2020-2021 COFT program is $1600 and 3300 lbs of seed that we will distribute seed to approximately 33 eastern Colorado farms located from Baca County north to Sedgwick County and west to Weld County.
