Davis, III, Pastor-Teacher Lesson Texts: Mark 1:16-20; Luke 14:25-35 Motto Text: Luke 14:27 (NLT), “And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.”Required Reading: Mark 1:1-20; St. Luke 14:25-35 Reliable Resources: Standard Lesson Commentary; Word Search 10 Electronic Library; The Bible Exposition Commentary by Dr. Warren Wiersbe; Rightly Dividing Luke by E. L. Bynum; Precepts for Living (UMI Publishing)INTRODUCTIONWe are challenged in this society to work hard, study hard, and play hard! One often thinks that the act of Christianity is simply one of just being good: don’t do this or do the other. Jesus, from the earliest days of His earthly ministry until the day they marched Him to Calvary and the Crucifixion, lived a life of total commitment to God His Father and the propagation of the message of salvation and discipleship. “Christ Calls His disciples from the Nominal to Phenomenal Service.”What is a disciple? According to Vines Complete Expository Dictionary: “A learner, but not only a pupil but an adherent: hence they are spoken of as imitators of their teachers.” The disciple is a clone plus of his or her master teacher. When one sees the pupil, he should also see the teacher!Define phenomenal: “Very remarkable or extraordinary.”SETTINGIn our lesson in Mark, we observe Christ moving among His early disciples at the beginning of His ministry. But then in the verse in Luke 14, we observe that the Disciples of Christ have moved from nominal to phenomenal service. Anticipated Power Points: Jesus’ Early Call to Discipleship…Nominal. Mark 1:16-20Jesus’ Call for Unconditional Commitment...Phenomenal. Luke 14:25-27 Jesus’ Call for Unselfish Conduct...Phenomenal. Luke 14:28-30Jesus’ Call for Unquestionable Character...Phenomenal. Luke 14:34-35 LESSON OUTLINEI. Jesus’ Early Call to Discipleship …Nominal. Mark 1:16-20Mark puts us on a fast track to practicing nominal discipleship. We see the announcements of John the Baptist preaching the coming of Christ (Mark 1:1-8). This is followed by the appearance of Jesus who surrenders to the service of God by baptism (Mark 1:9-10). Jesus then surrendered to be tempted by Satan the adversary in vv. 12-13. After which, arising to call four of His first disciples who answer the call to nominal discipleship (vv. 16-20). These early acts are important to demonstrate nominal discipleship. But as the years progressed, the commitment moved up to phenomenal discipleship. Note point II, after nearly three years later in Jesus’ ministry.II.Jesus’ Call for Unconditional Commitment…Phenomenal. Luke 14:25-27Someone once said, “He who wishes to follow Christ must choose Him so unconditionally as Lord and Guide that he makes all other loyalties and ties absolutely subordinate to the will of God!” When one loves Christ and follows him as Lord and Master, his love for Him so dwarfs any other affection until it appears as though he hates anyone or anything else; that’s the commitment of a genuine disciple. Joshua 24:15 states, “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Verse 27 makes it so clear that the bearing of or identifying with the Cross of Christ means “one is a dead man or woman walking,” because the cross meant full surrender of oneself, even unto death!III. Jesus’ Call for Unselfish Conduct…Phenomenal. Luke 14:28-33When one follows the way of Christ in discipleship, he or she is honestly willing to count the high cost of following Jesus!A. The cost appreciates over time. vss. 28-30B. The cost calls for personal sacrifice. vss. 31-32Like a king who considers the end result of his decision, so the genuine disciple considers the end result of his life’s decision, recognizing that there is a judgment day. This is made known to us in II Corinthians 5:10-11, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.”C. The cost of following Christ cannot be rivaled by anything. vs. 33IV. Jesus’ Call for Unquestionable Character…Phenomenal. Luke 14:34-35Like salt, Christ’s disciples can stand the litmus test of genuineness.A. Like salt, genuine disciples are a catalyst for true friendship. Middle Eastern treaties and covenants were ratified by the parties rubbing salt in the joining of hands. B. Like salt, genuine disciples are a seasoning to the world, bringing out the flavor of the Lord in people’s lives!C. Like salt, genuine disciples are a preservative to a decaying society. Remember the lives of Noah and Lot?D. Like salt, genuine disciples bring healing to what they touch, (even if it burns!). CLOSING Verse 35 declares, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” The genuine phenomenal disciple wants to know, in all of His intimate splendor, the Blessed Master, our Lord Jesus Christ. He or she can truly sing: “All to Jesus, I surrender. All to Him I freely give. I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live.”We are called to practice GENUINE PHENOMENAL DISCIPLESHIP!Bibleway Missionary Baptist Church, New Orleans & Little Bethel Baptist Church, Amite City, LAMailing Address: Post Office Box 19768, New Orleans, LA 70179Phone: (504) 486-7876 ~ 1263652349500Website: Television Broadcast: WHNO TV-20, Sunday, 6:30 a.m. Looking Ahead: March 17, 2019 Luke 15:11-24 NOTICE: THERE WILL BE NO NOONDAY BIBLE STUDY ON TUESDAYS AT THE CHURCH FOR A FEW WEEKS DURING THE RENOVATION OF OUR CHURCH SANCTUARY.
