Update-Leak forces Michigan nuclear plant shutdown

Detroit Edison Co. workers today were trying to pinpoint the cause of a non-radioactive water leak at the Fermi 2 nuclear power plant that prompted the utility to declare an emergency and quickly shut down the reactor Monday night. Workers were expected to enter the reactor containment vessel sometime today to find and repair the problem, which didn't affect the plant's nuclear reactor itself or its emergency systems. Repairs might be done quickly. "It looks like we should be able to wrap things up more in a matter of days than in a longer period of time," said John J. Austerberry, an Edison spokesman. A cooling system at the nuclear power plant was drained of at least 14,000 gallons of water on Tuesday and workers continue to investigate
