THE PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS

Spring has sprung and the Marcellus is still here. Unlike the old adage that says “if it seems too good to be true it probably is” the Marcellus Shale Play is just that “too good to be true”. The Marcellus has not only met but exceeded the expectations of even its most ardent supporters. Several of the more active companies have made periodic upward adjustment to their EUR’s (Estimated Ultimate Recovery). Some companies are reporting EUR’s as high as 7 to 10 BCF per horizontal leg. EUR’s of this level paint a bright future for the Appalachian Basin and the landmen who work it.

So remember the future for landmen in the Appalachian Basin is bright and it is fueled by the gas produced from the Marcellus.

AAPL REGIONAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT

The AAPL Board of Directors meeting was held on March 19 – 20, 2011 at the Eldorado Hotel and Spa in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Below is a brief summary of meeting highlights:

2011 Winter NAPE Expo: Although our numbers are not final, the results of the 2011 NPAE Expo are excellent. There was a 16% increase in attendance over last year (15,933 attendees), and 1640 booths were sold. 4500 individuals attended the Icebreaker event and 1500 individuals attended the Heroes luncheon featuring country vocalist LeAnn Rimes. To date, NAPE has contributed more than $1,650,000 to this worthy cause. NAPE generated $6,878,270 in gross revenue, $4,251,712 net to NAPE Partnership. The AAPL portion was $2,125,856, plus an additional $734,671 in management fees. The Heroes luncheon generated $350,000 in donations for new home construction for wounded veterans.

RPL Designation Requirements Modified: Due to the large number of practicing landmen who do not have college degrees, a motion was made and passed providing the AAPL will immediately begin accepting non-degreed persons for RPL status providing they have a minimum of five (5) years of land experience. To attain CPL status, a college degree from an accredited academic institution will still be required.

AAPL Annual Meeting: The 2011 AAPL Annual meeting will be held in Boston on June 8-11. AAPL has arranged an excellent line up of educational speakers and Karl Rove will be the keynote speaker. Touring events include whale watching, Boston Harbor Regatta, segway tour of Boston, Duck boat historical tour of Boston and Harvard University & John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum guided tour. Refer to for more information on the annual meeting and registration.

Financial Report: The AAPL balance sheet, as compared to the December 31, 2009, reports total assets have increased from $16,050,567 to $20,280,990 an increase of $4,230,423 or 26.4%. The AAPL Education Foundation reports total assets of $2,686,809, and the Landman Scholarship Trust reports total assets of $1,515,800. The AAPL continues to be in sound financial health.

Nomination Committee: The Nomination Committee is pleased to announce the following slate of candidates for the term covering period 7/1/2011 to 6/30/2012.

President Jack Richards (Devon Energy Corporation)

First VP Jim Dewbre (Southwestern Energy Company)

Second VP Bernard Ulincy (Range Resources)

Third VP Russell Shinevar (Independent)

Secretary Pamela Feist (Lakewood Exploration)

Treasurer Houston Kauffman (Independent)

Arbitration: Robin Forte, Executive VP of NAPE, has recently challenged/questioned several of the terms of his employment contract with AAPL. In an effort to quickly and amicably resolve all points of dispute, the AAPL and Forte will be engaged in arbitration in the near future.

In closing, if any MLBC member has concerns or issues they would like discussed at AAPL, please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned. The AAPL is genuinely committed to serving its membership!

Gregory Zerkel, Regional Director
