OHIO STATE SPRING FOOTBALL
2022 SCHEDULE CHANGES A revised 2022 Big Ten Conference
schedule was announced earlier this year, the result of changes made to the 2020 schedule because of the pandemic. Ohio State will still play the same nine teams and at the same home or away locations, but the order and dates of the games have been modified for six of the nine games. Only the games at Northwestern (Nov. 5), at Maryland (Nov. 19) and vs. Michigan (Nov. 26) remain unchanged. (See schedule on p. 2.)
A REAL DOOZY OF A SCHEDULE Ohio State will play four teams this season
that are among the Top 15 teams in winning percentage the last three years. Ohio State has the second-best winning pct. the last three years at .885. The 2022 opponents with a Top 15 win pct. over 2019-20-21 are: Notre Dame (No. 5 at .842); Iowa (No. 7 at .743); Michigan (No. 12 at .700) and Wisconsin (No. 15 at .676). Research by Pick Six Previews One piece of good news regarding these opponents: all four of the games are at Ohio Stadium. Ohio State's 2022 schedule also includes games at Michigan State, at Penn State, at Northwestern and at Maryland.
13 EARLY ENROLLEES There are 13 new scholarship players on
campus participating in spring drills, plus an additional five new walk-ons. The new freshmen recruits on offense are QB Devin Brown, TE Christian Bennett, WR Caleb Burton, OL George Fitzpatrick and WR Kyion Grayes. The new freshmen recruits on defense are LB C.J. Hicks, LB Gabe Powers, CB Jyaire Brown, DE Caden Curry, SAF Kye Stokes and CB Ryan Turner. Two new Buckeyes via the transfer portal are LB Chip Trayanum (Arizona State) and SAF Tanner McCalister (Oklahoma State). New walk-ons to the program are WR Corbin Cleveland, DL Quinton Burke, DL Zach Cicero, K Jayden Fielding, LB Elias Myers and QB Chad Ray.
3
FRESHMEN ARRIVALS IN JUNE The remaining 10 scholarship freshmen
from the 21-member 2022 recruiting class will arrive on campus in June. Those new Buckeyes include WR Kojo Antwi, WR Kaleb Brown, RB Dallan Hayden, OL Avery Henry, OL Carson Hinzman and OL Tegra Tshabola on offense. Those on defense arriving in June include DE Omari Abor, DE Kenyatta Jackson, DL Hero Kanu and SAF Sonny Styles.
HEISMAN FINALIST RETURNS Among the leading returnees from 2021
for the Buckeyes is third-year sophomore QB C.J. Stroud, who was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy as a freshman and who was named the Big Ten Conference's offensive player, quarterback and freshman of the year. Stroud set or tied 11 Ohio State QB records in 2021, including completion percentage, efficiency, yards per game and single game yards (573 vs. Utah). His 4,435 passing yards and 44 TD passes each rank second all-time at Ohio State.
WELCOME BACK Taking part in spring drills in some shape or
form will be a handful of key players who missed all or parts of last season. On offense, 2021 captain and WR Kam Babb will be practicing; and On defense, returning will be LB Mitchell Melton, DL Noah Potter, SAF Josh Proctor and LB Cody Simon. Players unavailable this spring include: DE Jacolbe Cowan, RB Marcus Crowley, DB Jantzen Dunn, DE Tyler Friday, OL Josh Fryar, LB Cade Kacherski, OL Harry Miller, SAF Lathan Ransom and TE Mitch Rossi.
POSITION-BY-POSITION SNAPSHOT Quarterback - C.J. Stroud returns after a
terrific, award-winning freshman campaign; Kyle McCord played in five games, started vs. Akron and completed 65.8 pct. of his 38 pass attempts; and frosh Devin Brown arrived as On3 Recruiting's No. 1 overall player in the 2022 prospect's class. Stroud was the third consecutive starting quarterback under day to be a Heisman finalist (Dwayne Haskins & Justin Fields).

OHIO STATE SPRING FOOTBALL
Running Back - In sophomores TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams, Ohio State has a pair of RBs that combined for 1,756 yards, 7.0 yards per carry and scored 22 touchdowns, plus caught 38 passes in 2021. Henderson scored more touchdowns last year - 19 - than any freshman in Ohio State history. His 1,248 rushing yards rank second among Ohio State freshmen (J.K. Dobbins; 1,403 in 2017). Williams' 508 rushing yards includes a team-best 7.2 yards per carry and the longest rush from scrimmage: 71 yards vs. Minnesota. Evan Pryor got in four games as a true freshman last year. Physical runner Marcus Crowley remains out because of an injury.
Wide Receiver - Oh no. What are we going to do because gone are first-team AllAmericans and soon-to-be first-round NFL Draft picks Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson. We're going to roll, that's what we're going to do. Jaxon Smith-Njigba will merely vye for major national honors after a season where he smashed Ohio State records for single game catches and yards (15 twice; and 347) and single season catches and yards (96 and 1,606). Julian Fleming, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka have talent and enough experience to shine this year as well. Keep an eye on RS freshman Jayden Ballard. And there's this good news: talented 2021 team captain Kam Babb also returns from injury.
Tight End - Ten receptions for 79 yards and one touchdown is the extent of the TE room's stats. Add 5 for 76 yards if you include Cade Stover's stats, but he opened spring on defense. Mitch Rossi is a valuable fifth-year player at the position. He won't practice this spring, but he'll be available this fall. Joe Royer and Gee Scott have combined for 12 games played and Sam Hart was a true freshman last season.
Offensive Line - Three 13-game starters from 2021 return: RT Dawand Jones, C Luke Wypler and RG-turned-LT Paris Johnson. LG Matthew Jones has started five games. That is a solid foundation for new OL coach Justin Frye to build around. Finding the starters at guard and building depth will be key this spring and during fall camp. The most experienced include Enokk Vimahi (14 games played), Donovan Jackson (13), Josh Fryer (11) and Jakob James (7).
4
Defensive Line - A total of 38 combined starts return along the line, led by 2021 team captain Zach Harrison's 15 and DT Taron Vincent's seven. Leader Tyler Friday and Javontae Jean-Baptiste each have five prior starts. Friday is returning from injury that kept him out all of last year. Jerron Cage is a fifth-year senior DT and there is plenty of young talent on the line with soph DTs Tyliek Williams and Ty Hamilton and soph DEs Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau. The D-line contributed 31.5 of the team's 37 quarterback sacks last year.
Linebacker - New DC Jim Knowles takes over this position group. Three juniors Steele Chambers, Tommy Eichenberg and Cody Simon - led the unit in number of plays from scrimmage last year. Eichenberg had 64 tackles, including a Rose Bowl record-tying 17 vs. Utah. Simon had 54 and Chambers 47. Fifth-year senior and eightgame starter Teradja Mitchell (45 tackles) also returns. Cade Stover switched to LB late last season and has the ability to play there or at tight end.
Cornerback - Two talented starters return at the position for new secondary/CB coach Tim Walton: fifth-year senior Cam Brown and sophomore Denzel Burke. Brown made seven starts last season while the precocious Burke started all 13 games as a freshman and led the team with 13 passes defensed (1 INT and 12 PBUs). Brown had eight (1 INT and 7 PBUs). Numerous younger players in the program are ready to step up to be rising stars, as well.
Safety - Ronnie Hickman leads this formidable group that will have a significant impact on the defense this year. He is the first Buckeye in six years to record 100 tackles. Bryson Shaw (12 starts), Cam Martinez and Kourt Williams all played extensively last year and fifth-year senior Josh Proctor, a five-game starter, returns after missing all but two games last year because of injury. New assistant Perry Eliano is in charge of the safeties.
Special Teams - All three specialists return: K Noah Ruggles, P Jesse Mirco and LS Brad Robinson. Ruggles was a first-team All-American (ESPN) and a Lou Groza Award finalist. He was 2nd nationally in FG pct. (.952; 20-21); 4th in scoring (10.6) and T7th with 134 points scored.
