For example: test and quiz reminders as well as important class information that needs to be shared.Course Description: Earth Science is a laboratory course in which students investigate the concepts of the Earth and environment. The course focuses on: the relationship between the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and space as well as how humans impact the environment at all of these levels. The following is a list of units that will be covered this semester. Unit 1: Intro. To Earth Topics, Mapping Unit 2 & 3 GeosphereUnit 4: Energy Unit 5 & 6: Hydrosphere Unit 7: AtmosphereUnit 8: Biosphere Unit 9: Astronomy Grading Policy: Projects/ Test 40%Classwork 30%Labs 20%Quizzes 10% 1st Quarter – 40% 2nd Quarter – 40% NCFE – 20% Final Exam: All Earth Science students are required to take the North Carolina Final Exam (NCFE). This is a cumulative test, so keep up with will all Earth Science papers. Classroom Expectations: Be on time. Class starts when the bell rings. Be in your seat ready to work. Show respect. Try your best. Keep your head up and participate in class. Complete your assignments and turn them into the bin on time. Follow cell phone BYOD & class policy. Go to the bathroom and get water before class. Water is allowed. No eating in the classroom. Clean up after yourself by returning borrowed supplies and throwing away your trash. No cheating! Do not copy others work and try to turn it in as your own. The school policy for cheating/plagiarism will be followed. All Middle Creek High School rules also apply as written in the student handbook. Materials and Supplies Needed: 3-ring binder for this class only – with notebook paper Pencils and pens Recommended Supplies: Colored pencils, highlighters, mini-scissors, ruler, glue stick Cell Phones: MCHS is a BYOD school. There is a BYOD poster located at the front of the classroom. One side is green, which allows students to have their cell phones out for school work. The other side is red, which requires students to have their cells phone put up out of sight. My expectation is that cell phones will be put up during direct instruction, class discussions, and any time not approved. Cell phones can be used as a tool for learning at the appropriate time in class. Students will be directed by the teacher as well as the BYOD poster for appropriate and inappropriate times to use their cell phone. If a student is using a cell phone during a red BYOD time the student will quietly and discretely be asked to put their cell phone in a brown paper bag. The bag will be stapled and remain with the student. When the BYOD poster is turned to green or when the teacher notifies the student he/she can remove their cell phone from the bag. Students who refuse to put their cell phone into the brown paper bag will be referred to the principle and their parent will be notified. Absent Policy: You are responsible for collecting your make-up work from the make-up work folder or you can access my website for the class agenda and materials. See me or email me if you have any questions regarding your make-up work. Website: barbeescience. You are responsible for completing all missed work (including your notes). You will be given 1 day for each day you missed to make up any missed assignments with no penalty. After this time, it is considered late and may appear online as a zero. If you missed a test you should schedule a makeup test when you return to school. Any pre-assigned work will be due upon return to school, unless prearranged with me.Late Work Policy: Late work is not encouraged. Late work will result in a reduced grade of 50%. Projects that are late will have a 10 point deduction for each day that it is late. Retest Policy: Each test evaluates state standards for which you must demonstrate understanding. Should you not do as well on a major assignment, you can come in for remediation and a re-test. The remediation assignment is normally to write out test corrections before you are allowed to take the re-test. Test do not leave my classroom and must be completed during remediation time, during lunch, or afterschool.
