LESSON PLAN: Mathematical LiteracySCHOOL: Alexander Road High School TEACHER: Miss S. Navsaria GRADE: 11DURATION: 1 days CLASS CONTACT TIME: 30 minutes DATE: 17 February 2015 SUBJECT FIELD / TOPIC / SPECIFIC OUTCOME:TOPIC: Imperial Conversions LEARNING OUTCOMES The learners will be able to:Identify two conversions, namely imperial and metrics units.Interpret the significance of each unit.Work with distance, lengths etc as examples.Understand the meaning of imperial and metric units.Adapt working with two conversion units. INTERGRATION WITH OTHER SUBJECTS:Life Orientation – ethics and valuesLanguages – reading and understanding scenariosMathematics - calculationsPRIOR KNOWLEDGE:Conversions (learnt in Grade 10)EXTENDED ACTIVITIES:Formal Assessment Task 2 page 42CONTEXT:Alex is a suburban school located in between the heart of Port Elizabeth. The grade 11 class, is rather small of only 22 learners, 14 females and 8 males. They are a lovely bunch of learners that ask questions, listen attentively and work hard. They all have textbooks and there is no disruption in the class. They are a perfect class to teach.TEACHER REFLECTION:This topic is very important in Mathematical Literacy, learners will need to grasp the topic of converting from imperial to metric measurements of length. They will need to convert from one unit to the next, using imperial conversions, so I hope when I teach this section the class will understand and follow the conversions.TEACHER, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIESTEACHER’S ACTIONSLEARNERS ACTIVITIESRESOURCESASSESSMENT STRATEGIES TIMERevise prior knowledge from Grade 10 to see what the learners remember from the previous year. Introduce the working with two imperial conversions topic, by pointing out the important concepts, do the example with the class and then give the exercise from the textbook. Walk around the class to assist the learners and mark the exercise before the class ends. Access learners’ knowledge by asking, recapping, consolidating and reinforcing the key questions about what was learnt in the class lesson today about the working with imperial conversions.Listen attentively to teacher’s lesson and answer the questions the textbook and respond to the questions. Complete the activity from the textbook by analysing the lengths and distances per conversion. Respond to key questions and ask questions where nessecary.Textbook, page 30 and 31 exercise 2.2Overhead and transparenciesQuestion and answerVerbal feedbackClass activityDirect instruction 30 minutes ................
