INTRODUCTION

One greatest privileges of the Christian believer is to be associated with God in the important work of winning souls to the Lord Jesus Christ (Proverbs 11:30 (KJV) The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise). Few things that men can do are as far reaching in their consequences. Truly, the personal worker affects eternity, and will receive eternal rewards (Daniel 12:3 (KJV) And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever).

So closely does God identify Himself with soul-winners that He even permits them to speak as if they themselves were able to save souls Fur instance, in Romans 11:14 (KJV) If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them, Paul speaks of saving some of his own people, “If by any means. . . I might save some of them.” Again in I Corinthians, he writes, 1 Corinthians 9:22 (KJV) To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. We all know that Paul himself could not save anyone. Yet God graciously allows him to use this language because of the close way in which He links Himself with human instruments by which He furthers His work.

But not only is personal work a great privilege; it is a solemn duty. The following are but three of many New Testament passages which emphasize the responsibility of each Christian in this matter, and the divine plan of world-wide evangelization through the witness of individuals.

The first is the great commission, Matthew 28:19-20 (KJV) 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Here the Lord commends His disciples to -

1. Go and make disciples of all nations (R.V.);

2. Baptize them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost;

3. Teach them to observe all things that He had commanded.

It is futile to argue that this command was only intended for a particular group of people or for a certain period of time. It is the abiding order of the risen Lord to everyone whom He has purchased with His blood.

The second passage, Ephesians 4:11-12 (KJV) 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, also teaches the important of every member evangelism.

The thoughts of these verses are as follows

1. Ephesians 4:11 (KJV) 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers - He, the ascended Christ, gave gifts unto men. What were the gifts? They were men with divine qualifications for proper Christian faith. Some of these men were apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers.

2. Ephesians 4:12 (KJV) For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ

- Why did the Lord give these gifted men? The answer is so that through them, all the saints might be built up to carry on the work freely, to that, in turn, the body of Christ might be edified.

The Revised Version correctly translates the verse, perfecting of the saints unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ.”

This is very important point. The gifts were not given so that the saints might sit back and enjoy their ministry, and be perpetually dependent on them. Rather, the gifts were for the purpose of training all the saints to do the work of ministering. (This, of course does not mean that all believers are expected to be platform preachers, but it hat God̓s purpose for every saint is to be engaged in making Christ known)

Thus the gifts themselves are, in a sense expendable. Their purpose it to equip every child of God for active Christian service. Again, exclude secular occupations, but it means that the interest of Christ should come first, and that our occupations should ‘the purpose of enabling us to carry on an active witness for the Lord.

The final passage is found in 2 Timothy 2:2 (KJV) And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. The Apostle Paul, addressing Timothy, writes - And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. This verse is important because plan we should follow in personal evangelism. Each of us should commit the truth to others, instructing those others to do the same, so that the knowledge of Christ will flow out, in ever widening circles the ripples of a pond.

Someone has pointed out that there are four generations of Christians in this one verse (2 Timothy 2:2 (KJV) And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also). How quickly the family can growl. Beginning with one man, if the number of Christians could be doubled each year, there would be 2,147,483,648 believers at the end of 31 years.

We see this law of reproduction in nature all around us. In 5 years, one grain of wheat or rice will multiply to produce thousands of bushels or cavans. It is not surprising, therefore, that the Bible very often uses the process of sowing seed to illustrate the work of evangelism (Psalm 126:6 (KJV) He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him; Psalm 126:6 (KJV) He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him; Matthew 13:1-23 (KJV) 1 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. 2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. 3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; 4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: 5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: 6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: 8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. 9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. 10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. 12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. 13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. 17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. 18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. 19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. 20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; 21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. 22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. 23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty).

To summarize, then, we have learned that personal work is:

1. A tremendous privilege, affecting eternity.

2. A solemn responsibility, involving every Christian.

3. The divine method for reaching the greatest number of people in the shortest period of time.

The question which each of us must now face is this, what am I going to do about it? To anyone who hesitates in responding, we would simply commend the reading of the following paragraph written by an ATHEIST “Did I firmly believe, as millions say they do, that the knowledge and practice of religion in this life influences destiny in another, religion would mean everything to me. I would cast away earthly enjoyment as dross, earthly cares as follies, and earthly thoughts and feelings as vanity. Religion would be my first waking thought, and my last image before sleep sank me into unconsciousness. I should labour in its cause alone. I would esteem one soul gained for heaven worth a life of suffering. Earthly consequences should never stay my hand, nor seal my lips. Earth, its joys and its griefs, would occupy no moment of my thoughts. I would strive to look upon Eternity alone, and on the immortal souls around me, soon to hi everlastingly happy or everlastingly miserable. I would go forth to the world and preach to it in season and out of season, and my text would be, “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul? ̓” (An Atheist)

“The last thing the Devil wants you to do is to win a soul definitely to Christ. If you don’t believe, try it. The Devil will let you go to prayer meetings, he will let you talk on religious subjects, and ‘do many mighty deeds, if only you will stop short of persuading men to accept Christ as Lord, and openly confess Him before men. (Charles M. Alexander)

“May God forbid

That 1 should meet one soul today

Who through ages of time could say,

1 did not point him to the Way.”
