INTRODUCTION
Well my beloved, this is it. The very moment that has been the aim of this series of lessons. Jesus has been despised and rejected of men; He has been rebuked and scorned; He has been hung up for our hang-ups; and as we viewed Him last week, – crucified, dead and buried. Nevertheless, thank God for the resurrection! Without the resurrection, there would be no hope, no help, and no ultimate victory! I Corinthians 15:14, 20 tells us: “And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain… But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.”
Our lesson this week just takes a snapshot of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from Matthew, but as you have noticed in the required reading, you should read all of these areas of scripture to encourage your faith and testimony. Now according to Matthew’s account, the Jewish religious leaders were very skeptical of what would happen if the body of Jesus was taken from the tomb where Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus buried Him (Matthew 27:62-66). They placed a “watch,” guards and a Roman seal upon and about the tomb. This would assure that the disciples of Jesus would not steal His body and proclaim He was alive. But beloved, God did not need such drama, for scripture declared that Jesus would rise from the dead alive! Psalm 16:10 assures us: “For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.” Also read Matthew 16:21; 17:22; 20:17; Mark 8:31; 10:32-34; Luke 9:21-22. Let us examine the lesson for this week as we declare “The Passion Week of Jesus Christ…A Week of Ultimate Victory!”
Anticipated Power Points:
• The Daughters of Victory. Matthew 28:1, 5, 8-10
• The Dawn of Victory. Matthew 28:2-4
• The Declaration of Victory. Matthew 28:6-7
• The Defeated – by His Victory. Matthew 28:11-15
OUTLINE
I. The Daughters of Victory. Matthew 28:1, 5, 8-10
The first component that claims our attention is the faithful women whom I call “The Daughters of Victory.” Matthew names only two, but with the help of the other gospel writers, we find there were more than two.
A. Their Devotion. vs. 1
Note that they came very early in the morning, at the dawning of the day. They had waited for the Sabbaths to pass, for it appeared from scripture that there were at least two Sabbaths that week - a High Sabbath (John 19:31: “The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day, (for that Sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.) and of course the regular weekly Sabbath. Note their loving devotion as they had prepared spices to anoint the body of Jesus. (Read Luke 23:55-56.) Now they came to perform their final act of devotion, but were met with a great surprise!
B. Their Discernment. vs. 5
To their discerning eyes, they saw an open tomb and an angel which caused them to fear, but the angel assured them that all was well. They had come to the right place where the crucified Christ had been laid, but He was alive and gone!
C. Their Departure. vs. 8
Upon hearing of the Lord’s resurrection, these Daughters of Victory departed with great joy to give these words to the Lord’s disciples, who had not yet come to this great knowledge.
D. Their Delight. vs. 9-10
Faithfulness always deserves a reward! Jesus appears to these women in the flesh, and they fall at His feet in humble obeisance, and worshipped Him. He reiterated the angelic message that they go and tell His disciples to meet Him in Galilee. Note the expression “All Hail” that Jesus used. It simply means “REJOICE!” And beloved, that’s exactly what we all should do, REJOICE! REJOICE! as these Daughters of Victory did. Christ Jesus is Alive and Well!
II. The Dawn of Victory. Matthew 28:2-4
As the women rejoiced, the keepers or soldiers dreaded the victorious power of God. An earthquake, a descending angel – and they fell like dead men, fainting for fear! The resurrection morning saw the glorious light of God in the angels strike fear in the hearts of proven warriors. Praise God!
III. The Declaration of Victory. Matthew 28:6-7
I separated this section from the Daughters of Victory just to emphasize its significance. This is the message not only to the first women who braved the dawn to see the glorious heavenly light, but this is the message of hope and deliverance to the masses. Not “you can have a car”; “you can have a good paying job”; “you can call it and haul it”; “name it and claim it”. But, “He is not here, for He is risen.” Beloved, the declaration of victory is “Christ is Risen!” This is the message we all should declare: He’s Alive! He is Risen! Because of the resurrection of Christ, we have that blessed hope of His glorious appearing! We have power for living now and later! We have victory over sin and Satan! Paul wanted above all to ultimately really know the Risen Christ, and He wrote in Philippians 3:10, “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.” Beloved, everything that’s worth anything is centered on this fact: “HE IS NOT HERE: FOR HE IS RISEN!”
Finally beloved, the ultimate victory of the Passion Week of Christ brought defeat to all His enemies!
IV. The Defeated – by His Victory. Matthew 28:11-15
A. The Declaration of the Defeated. vs. 11
Jesus was risen and they saw the angel and fell faint at his presence. What a message to deliver to the chief priests!
B. The Deceit of the Defeated. vss. 12-14
Not willing to face the truth, the assembly of religious leaders would rather pay off the soldiers to spread a lie than to face the fact that Jesus lives. Paul said it best in II Corinthians 4:3-4: “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” The deceived are willfully blinded by the deceit of pride and sin!
C. The Damnation of the Defeated. vs. 15
The lie was spread by money-loving sinners. Oh that God would be merciful on those who would rather take the money over Messiah! But such a crowd still lives today, who say “show me the money” rather than surrender to the Living Lord! Their lies continued to go forth, but today they are dead and forgotten, and the truth of the gospel is
still marching on!
CLOSING
Beloved, remember that we serve a risen Saviour, and His name is Jesus Christ! He has gained the ultimate victory, and to as many as receive Him, to them He gives power to be made the Children of God!
