Koi Fish Lesson PlanAngel PapadopoulosUniversity of ToledoCLASS: Kindergarten, Toledo Public Schools, East Broadway ElementaryTIME NEEDED: One 50 minute Class PeriodART HISTORICAL BACKGROUND RELATED TO THE LESSON: Koi (鯉) or more specifically nishikigoi (錦鯉), are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that are kept for decorative purposes in koi ponds or water gardens. Koi fish literally translates to “carp”. However, it has a deeper meaning and symbolism. There are different meanings in the Chinese, Japanese and other East Asian cultures.Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties. Koi fish meaning in Japanese culture:The word Koi is originated from Japan. Japanese are thinking that koi fish are “living jewels”. Nishikigoi is the common word for koi in Japan. It is the symbol of friendship and romantic love. The fish is symbolic of unity and fidelity as it is noted that fish (particularly koi) often swim together in pairs. With this in mind, fish are often given as wedding gifts in the form of charms or figurines to present the newly-wed couple with an auspicious sign of fidelity and perfect union. They also represent fertility and abundance due to their ability to reproduce in speed and volume.Furthermore it symbolizes strength and courage. In Japanese culture, there are traditional tattoos, jewelries, ink drawings and many other artifacts using the form and symbolic meaning of the Koi fish.Koi fish meaning in Chinese culture:In the Chinese culture Koi fish traditionally symbolize aspiration and advancement. There are very old legends in China about Koi fish as mythical animals. One legend said that a Koi fish swam up a waterfall in the Yellow River and the fish turned into a dragon at the Dragon Gate.Furthermore, in Buddhism, the fish symbolizes happiness and freedom. Also the fish makes an appearance as one of the eight sacred symbols of the Buddha: 1) Conch, 2) Lotus, 3) Parasol, 4) Wheel, 5) Knot, 6) Pair of Golden Fish, 7) Banner of Victory and 8) Vase. SUBJECT: Students will create Koi fish made out of toilet paper rolls and tissue paper. Finished project will originally be used to play a game during the remaining class period. The game is to “feed” the fish with the appropriate/matching color pompons using chopsticks as the fish hang from a string. ACADEMIC LANGUAGE: Japanese art, Chinese art, Buddhism, symbol, Koi fish, names of art making materials and tools (tissue paper, scissors, glue, googly eyes etc.) EQUIPMENT/AV MATERIALS:Reproductions/Images of traditional Japanese ink drawings, pictures of ponds with koi fish, Koi Fish PowerPoint presentation, Vimeo video link of swimming koi fish.SUPPLIES:Tissue paper of various colors (2 sheets per student, of the same color, approximately 6x11 in.), toilet paper rolls (1 roll per student), precut sheets (4x6 in.) printer paper, scissors, stick glue, pairs of googly eyes, color string/wire. OBJECTIVES:Students will:Identify and describe the Koi fish.Develop fine motor skills using different tools and art media.Follow instructions and work efficiently.Evaluate the aesthetic value of the Koi fish as ornamental and symbolic animals in Asian cultures.BENCHMARKS AND STANDARDS:Ohio Fine Art/Visual Art Standards:5PE Identify and name materials used in visual art.Students will demonstrate knowledge of the materials they will be using.4PR Reduce objects into basic shapes and lines in relation to the whole image. Students will use simplified forms to create a fish form.2RE Show confidence and pride in their artistic accomplishments. Students will work carefully and diligently on their project.3RE Connect their personal experiences to what they see in works of art.Students will be encouraged to share personal experiences seeing/owning (gold) fish and present their perception of the symbolic meaning examined.State Standards in Other Disciplines:Acquisition of Vocabulary: Students will learn vocabulary related to Koi fish historical meaning (symbolism, friendship, love, courage, strength)LEARNER OUTCOMES:Students will be able to:Recognize and describe the characteristics of the Koi fish. Adapt and apply the characteristics of the Koi fish in order to create their own fish according to those characteristics while developing and demonstrating their craftsmanship skills.Arrange and manage the materials provided to create form and texture and evaluate the aesthetic outcome of the materials.SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:Students will be using different types of (color) paper. They will be using scissors and glue so they need to be instructed to:Be careful not to get glue on floors or their clothes. Be careful when using the scissors.ALTERNATIVES TO THE LESSON:Student time on task:Some students may be impulsive and rush to finish the project without giving enough attention to important aspects of the work. They need encouragement to develop more complex products. The teacher helps these students become more thoughtful and deliberate by encouraging and assisting them. Alternative:Some students may be done with their work and not have anything more to add to it. These students can take some time to do coloring sheets with depictions of fish/Koi fish until all students are done with their project and ready to play the game.PROCEDURE:A. Motivation/ Teacher made example:Students will be introduced to the subject via PowerPoint presentation.Students will be presented with a video where they will observe live Koi fish swimming in a pond.Students will be presented with the teacher made example of the project. The teacher will complete the construction of another example while giving step by step instructions to the students.B. Questions related to motivation:Knowledge:What is a Koi fish? What is the Koi fish similar to? (goldfish) Where does the work Koi fish come from? (Japan, China, Asia)Analysis:Identify the form of the fish. Are the shapes/forms symmetrical/ asymmetrical? Explain.Application:How will you use the materials (toilet paper roll: body, tissue paper: color, fins, tail)? What do you do first? (following instructions)What colors will you use for your Koi fish?C. Production: 1. Apply glue on the white sheet of paper (4x6 in.) and glue it around the toilet paper roll, one side edge in line with the edge of the toilet paper roll.2. On the end of the roll with the excess paper, students will make cuts on the paper until the toilet paper roll end (cutting only the “soft” white paper)3. Fold the ends of the excess paper end inwards, creating a “bottom”4. Apply glue on the toilet paper roll and wrap it in one sheet of tissue paper, leaving one edge in line with the toilet paper roll edge and leaving the excess tissue paper “hang” over the side they previously created a bottom.5. Carefully twist the excess tissue paper to form a fish tail. Using scissors make 2-3 cuts on the folded tail to make look like strips.6. Use the other tissue paper to create fins, folding the paper and cutting 2 smaller fin-like pieces. Fins are glued on each side of the middle part of the toilet paper roll/body of the fish.7. Use a pair of googly eyes to place eyes near the mouth/free end. Teacher makes a hole near the fish mouth with a whole puncher. Students use color string/wire to tie around the hole.8. On a strip of paper, students write their name and glue it on one end to the inside of the fish mouth/belly. TEACHER EVALUATION/AFTER THE LESSON:Some students are impatient and hasty with their work while others need more time to follow the instructions. Many students could not follow simple instructions, even after presented with a demonstration of how to manipulate the materials. If I would teach this lesson again, I would make sure to have introduced them to manipulation techniques and make sure they have prior knowledge that will help them understand the directions. EVALUATION OF STUDENT WORK:Student work will be evaluated through the use of a rubric focusing on the quality of the finished work and the time spent on task and following instructions. Student will receive instant feedback and suggestions while working on the project. ................
