POLS 1100: Worksheet #1

Use the table below to answer questions 1, 2 and 3.

|State |Median Household Income |Median Price of House |

|Utah |$ 55,220.00 |$ 146,100.00 |

|Colorado |$ 55,517.00 |$ 166,600.00 |

|Wyoming |$ 52,433.00 |$ 96,600.00 |

|Idaho |$ 46,136.00 |$ 106,300.00 |

|Montana |$ 43,000.00 |$ 99,500.00 |

Question 1:  What do we mean by terms like “median household income” and “median house price”? A median is the middle number of a subset of numbers ranked in order. This means that of all the houses in each state, a house with the value listed in the table above has an equal number of houses that are valued more than that price and less than that price. The median household income sets a mark at which an equal number people in the state have a higher household income and a lower household income than the number listed.

Question 2:  Which state has the highest median household income, and which state has the lowest? Colorado has the highest median household income of $55,517. Montana has the lowest median household income at $43,000.

Question 3: What is Montana’s household income as a percentage of Utah’s. Explain how you arrived at your answer. Montana's household income is 78% of Utah's median household income. To determine this number, I divided Montana's income number by Utah's income number and multiplied the result by 100. 43,000/55220 = .7787 X 100 = 77.87% which I rounded up to 78%.

Question 4:  Which state has the highest median family income as a percentage of the median house price in that state? Explain how you arrived at your answer.

Wyoming has the highest median family income as a percentage of the median house price at 54.28%. I arrived at this number by dividing each state's median income by the state's median house price and multiplying that number by 100. Comparing the numbers, I was able to see that Wyoming had the highest number at 54.28, while Colorado had the lowest at 33.32%.

Use the table below to answer questions 5 and 6.

|Candidate |Number of Donors |Money Raised |

|Mr. Salinger |895 |$180,000 |

|Mrs. Shelley |1,562 |$200,000 |

|Mr. Vonnegut |367 |$190,000 |

|Ms. Atwood |505 |$140,000 |

Question 5: Overall, which candidate raised the most money per donor? Explain how you arrived at your answer.

Mr. Vonnegut raised the most money per donor, with a mean of $517.71 contributed per donor. I arrived at this answer by dividing the amount of money raised by the number of donors, to determine the mean amount contributed per donor for each candidate.

Question 6: Calculate Ms. Atwood’s number of donors as a percentage of Mrs. Shelly’s. Explain how you arrived at your answer.

Ms. Atwood had 32% of the number of donors as Mrs. Shelly. I arrived at this answer by taking Ms. Atwood's number of donors and dividing it my Ms.Shelly's number of donors and multiplied the result by 100. The result was 32.33 which I rounded down to 32%.

Question 7: Between the four candidates, what is the mean amount of money raised? Explain how you arrived at your answer. $177,500 is the mean amount of money raised per candidate. I calculated the sum of all 4 candidates monies raised and then divided the result by 4, the number of candidates. This gave me the mean.

Question 8: Between the four candidates, what is the mean number of donors? Explain how you arrived at your answer. 832.25 donors is the mean.

SUM of the Number of Donors: 3329 / Number of Candidates: 4 = 832.25, which can be rounded down to 832 since there are only whole people.

Question 9: Calculate Mr. Salinger’s money raised as a percentage of that raised by Mr. Vonnegut. Explain how you arrived at your answer. 94.74%

(Mr. Salinger's Amount : 180,000 / Mr. Vonnegut's Amount: 190,000) X 100 = 94.73684

Question 10: Comparing Mr. Salinger and Ms. Atwood, which candidate raised the most money per donor? Explain how you arrived at your answer.

Ms. Atwood raised the most money per donor at a mean of $277.23. Mr. Salinger only raised an average (or mean) of $201.12 per donor. I arrived at this by calculating the mean of each donors contribution to the candidate.

Mr. Salinger's Total Contributions/Total # of Donors = $201.12

Ms.Atwood's Total Contributions/Total # of Donors = $277.23
